no X to close window in first of three photos, and why one photo is must to be open? Why not just grey backround

The 'X' is shown to the left of the tab, but for some reason, your ruler isn't displaying correctly. If you hide rulers, you may be able to see the 'X', but if the ruler that is overlapping it remains, you may need to do a Photo Factory Reset to clear it.

Did you try hiding the ruler and If that doesn't work did you try a Ctrl run up to see if it clears the section of the ruler that shouldn't be displayed over the 'X' bearing in mind that a factory reset will set all your tools and any custom changes you've made to the UI back to their factory defaults.

On Windows there’s a keyboard shortcut for closing the currently active window. Doesn’t macOS have something like that?
