A document can have exactly one of these setups:

  • A canvas; or
  • One or more Artboards.

In your situation, you need to first convert the canvas and its current contents into one an Artboard, which you can do following the directions in the Help. After that, you can add your additional Artboards.

Artboard based documents can only be converted to a singular canvas by deleting every artboard within the document, which in turn will delete the objects.

For this process to work the opposite needs to be done, the Canvas based A0 document needs to be converted to an Artboard (by following the help instructions) after which point the additional artboards can be added or pasted over.
