I have returned to my desktop computer after ten days shutdown... a new problem has arisen: each time I go to the object selection tool it crashes AP.  I tried with four images in succession and it crashed immediately every time.  The tool worked satisfactorily before I went away.

Using a Mac Mini M1, Benq sw240 display monitor.  8 GB ram  Sequoia 15.3.2

Please advise.  I find this tool to be very useful.

Thank you for your reply.

I checked if display was set to Metal, and I guess that since I have an M1 chip it was automatically set to metal.  I did as you suggested and changed to OpenGL.

I restarted and tested.  Sadly clicking on the object selection tool caused AP to crash again.  I am beginning to wonder if there are other tools that will cause a crash - but I don't intend to conduct a search right now!

Here is one of the several crash reports that were made:

Affinity Photo 2 Affinity Store-2025-04-18-170257.ips

Metal is on by default for everybody. This is just my opinion, but using Metal seems a bit less reliable with Apple Silicon than it did with Intel so I avoid it.

Your crash is likely isolated to this tool or to this and the other machine learning feature - you should try the other one on the same images for testing.

Serif will likely have more questions but I'm out of suggestions.

Good luck

Thanks MikeTO, for your attempt to help.  If I don't hear from Serif soon I will try reinstalling a fresh copy.

Hi @Tr48,

We've had a few reports of the tool failing on specific user devices/environments, this is currently logged internally and under investigation. The crash report provided appears to be missing nearly all the expected data in the backtrace. Are there any other Photo 2 recent crash reports available that you can send us?

A few potential solutions to try below:

  • In Photo Settings -> Machine Learning Models Change 'Inference' to 'CPU Only' and then restart and try again
  • In Photo Settings -> Machine Learning Models uninstall and re-install both ML models, restart and try again
  • Perform a basic CTRL Runup to clear the defaults (instructions below)
  • Re-install the app

If it still fails, we could look at performing a full factory reset of the app's local user data, but best to run through the above first.

Hello Nathan

I went to Photo Settings and changed 'inference' to 'CPU Only', restarted .... Success!

Just to experiment I went back and changed it back to add GPU and the programme crashed.  Changed again to CPU only and did not crash.

Many thanks

Trevor

FYO I recently bought a MacBook Pro, M4 chip with 24GB ram and left my desktop mac to automatically download a mirror of all my software to it.. this was a few weeks before my desktop version of AP started crashing.  The laptop has not crashed and overall works very well with AP.
