Hello,

I have an issue involving longer footnotes that don't split between pages. There are a few posts talking about issues relative to footnotes, but nothing related it seemed to what I have here. There is a sample file attached, but the basic setup is this:

  • Baseline grid used for the main text, relative to top margin (although position doesn't seem to be a main factor in the issue);
  • "Allow split notes" option selected;
  • Footnotes are styled to not align with baseline grid;
  • Notes min gap before = 6 pt; Gap between = 2 pt;

Here's a screenshot of the result using random text:

As you see, there is plenty of space on the left-hand side page to allow for the 3rd note, but it moves the whole note on the next page, along with the line of the main text with the reference.

Fixing that issue would be greatly appreciated!

I'm also open to any input anyone would have.

Thanks

Whatever this bug is has to do with the baseline grid. If you change the text frame on the left to have Ignore Baseline Grid checked it seems to work okay. I think this has been noted before.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Hi @Old Bruce

Thanks for the feedback. That's right, the split note works if we ignore the baseline grid, but I do need to keep my text aligned to the grid, so unfortunately, ignoring the baseline grid would not be an option for me.

Set up a Paragraph Style that uses Exact for leading and use the Baseline Grid's spacing for that Exact leading value. You may need to alter other paragraph styles space after setting to give a multiple of that leading.

Were you able to make it work that way? I tried these parameter with the paragraph style of the footnote, and also with a new style for the main text, but the issue is still there.

You might be able to work around this issue by adjusting the height of the main text frames.

I modified your test doc a bit to illustrate the problem. Your text frames are slightly taller than the baseline grid. The footnote splits properly when the left frame is scaled so that the height snaps to the baseline grid. It won't split when it's not snapped to the baseline grid.

The Publisher 2.6.3 beta correctly renders the “footnote_issue.afpub” file that @MikeTO uploaded. But, that is only because that file uses a baseline grid for the main text as well as footnote blocks. If you turn off “Align to Baseline Grid” for footnote blocks (to match the original instructions and screenshot from @Ben_Vandebrug), the beta varies the gap between the bottom of the footnotes and the bottom of the text frame, resulting in the bottom margin on the left page being smaller than on the right page.

In this screenshot from Publisher 2.6.3.3273, I’ve marked the size of the split third footnote text frames in purple and shown the different bottom margins in green.

The top margins of the two split footnote frames are also different (tight to the text on the left page and a small gap on the right page), but that doesn’t cause issues in this file. But, when this is fixed, hopefully all the margin inconsistencies could be resolved for split footnotes.
