I'm totally new to Affinity Photo, and so I decided to start working my way through methodically.

I can see numerous lessons for me to use, and I will use them.  But initially when Infinity Photo first opens v 2.6.2 , I am presented with a screen showing "Beginner lessons" .  I downloaded the first one, and the second (I think the second is called Frankentoon.

This results in my first big disappointment.  Despite looking everywhere I can think of and searching on words like "Paraskeva", and Frankentoon I can't find the lessons.  Are these videos, (the second lesson is about 60MB download).  Where are these lessons downloaded to?  I'm assuming that for 60MB, more is intended than the 6+ icons that occur on the screen, clicking on which does nothing.  OK, so maybe someone will let me know.

Yes I am using Windows 11.

After downloading, double-click on the image in the lessons tab to open the lesson. They are not stored in an easy to find location & will be removed on the next restart to prevent them using too much disk space over time.

If you really want to see where they are stored & are on a Mac, open one & use File > Reveal in Finder.

The need to download a lesson is clearly indicated by an icon that disappears after the data is downloaded.

It is a shame that this "clarity" ends here, because after downloading the lesson, an icon could be displayed to open it.

Hi R C-R, and Psenda

Yep, file seems to download all OK, but then nothing.  As I said, I use Windows 11, and I have good search tools. I tried all the search words I can think of, and I finally found where the downloads go:  see attachment 1.  The only way I could find these was to watch all activity on my C: drive as the files downloaded.

None of these files are playable, etc.  As you say, when you download the file, the icon disappears, and doesn't reappear if I shut Affinity and restart.  And as you say Psenda, once the icon has gone there is no other option, nothing that is clickable, and in the downloaded folder there is nothing that Windows will play.

This is my first attempt with Affinity, and none of the presented tutorials play.

Yes, I have used lots of software, but mainly on Linux and Windows.  The problem I am seeing is like some other programs that have been mainly developed on a Mac and improperly ported to Windows.

Psenda are these issues common with Affinity?

Once the download is complete, have you tried double-clicking on the lesson in the Lessons dialog, as suggested above?

See attached image.

Hi GarryP,  yes I have.  Yes, I get the image exactly as you show, but nothing is alive.

I changed a few things so that I could not only see when network traffic was coming down but what files were being transferred (dowmloaded) .  On clicking/and/or double clicking no further files were downloaded.  GarryP, what do you run Affinity on?

I then thought that maybe there was an installation error, so I did a deep uninstalled, redownload, reinstall, reboot, etc.  Still the same result.

Is this a bug in v 2.6.2 in the Windows version?  Maybe.

What do you mean by that? Were you expecting a video, or something similar?

The "lesson" is simply a document which gives you some information and something to experiment with.

Some of the layers are locked but you can unlock them if you want to experiment further. (You can search the Help for lock to get more information about that.)

To GarryP,

When I try to click on anything in the image shown I get no video, and I get no written notes, nothing at all apart from the image first posted that just sits there.  Each of these tutorials download abt 80+MB of files.  I get no written lessons.  Nothing.  Now, although difficult, I have traced down where these downloads go and there is nothing into the Folder, subfolders and files that is a file that is playable, displayable etc in Windows.  I have posted these folders and files details a few days ago.  Yes I have been absent from answering as I was hospitalized for a heart attack, requiring stents etc.  I have survived for now.

When one is presented with downloadable tutorials one does expect to see something when one clicks on the resulting icons.  Alive simply means being presented with icons that do something, anything when I click on it.  I am sure I don't need to tell you that Gary.

GarryP, Psenda, I am working hard to evaluate Affinity as an alternative, which I would love to do with a positive outcome.  I don't want to post my review until someone can help me with this issue.  I think I have said that I have done a deep uninstall, and now I have tried it on my laptop (still Win 11) and the issue is still the same.  I am a seasoned Windows user, and for years I have run a free phone-in help desk for very poor people.  What I am seeing is a real problem, but it seems nobody will work with me so I can continue with my review.  I get the feeling that I am seen as some idiot.  That may be true guys, but I do know my way around Windows.  Is there a company rep for Affinity that can help?  Yes, I have paid for this software.  I am not using a trial.  And I add that all you guys are trying to help.  Thank you.  But pls accept that I am a user with lots of  extensive Windows experience.

Hi Psenda, yes, of course I can see many educational videos available on the web.  I just did, naively, expect that when a new user is first presented with a number of tutorials that when I download them, there would be something these downloads lead to.  Videos, written, notes, anything.  As you all know I am trying to evaluated this image software, so as I am used to doing, following instructions from software to replicate that people that read in my review will encounter.

Can anyone tell me whether any of the 80+MB (each) tutorials have any use, and if they do, how can I access these?  Is there a company rep that can help?  Reposted

And GarryP,

Can you look at the folder of the tutorial downloads (attached).  Are you able to do anything with these downloaded files?  But I use Windows 11

Listen guys, if this is some sort of bug with Win 11.  Fine.  These things happen everywhere.  But at the moment, I am still trying to get enough confidence to move to Affinity, and give up my Adobe completely.  Nothing would please me more.  Even if I let some one to take over my PC that's OK.  At the moment I feel that people think here is a total idiot.  Is there any actual help I can get?  There's no too much any idiot can get wrong to download, and install the software and then, as instructed, follow their introductory tutorials.  Again I post what is downloaded.  Nothing is windows playable, perhaps Affinity should pick up these download videos and show something, anything.

WYSIWYG!

You just read what it says and try what it tells you to do. No videos, no interaction (Edit: actually there is a little interaction, see the video in my next post), no bugs! - just what you see on on the screen. Apart from the two tutorials, the other items are just samples for you to see what can be done.

it is not an image, it is a Affinity Photo document with 7 artboard parent layers, each of which has a name (like Apply adjustments or Apply masks) paired with a layer named "Give it a try." Each of those artboards includes notes that tell you what to do to give it (adjustments, masks, whatever) a try.

So just read those instructions & do what they say.
