Laserjunge
Dear Affinity Designer Team, I am very excited follower of your work. Your app seems to have the potential for a AI alternative for what I am looking for since months. I am very close to purchase it. But there is one critical feature I am missing and that is a 3D tool box. Beside AI there is no other vector graphics software on the market which is able to "extrude" objects and to use their path to make perspectival logos a.s.o. To give a better understanding of my request I attach three AI tutorials resulting in very simple but neat logo designs: a) 3D maze: http://gomedia.us/zine/tutorials/illustrator/create-3d-vector-labyrinth-maze/ b) Flying Stars: http://www.bittbox.com/illustrator/illustrator-tutorial-how-to-make-3d-vector-vintage-stars c) Perspectival logos: http://www.vektorgarten.de/illu-tipps-3d.html In addition a shape library for simple 3D objects (cube, sphere, cylinder, tube...) would be amazing. I hope, I did not ignore a feature which is doing similar things. Thanks for your great work. Cheers, Laser. Would be great if you could integrate it! Thanks in advance!
Laserjunge
It would be just great to know whether we can expect such (or a similar) feature within this release of Affinity Designer or whether this is more something fundamental which has to be added in a future upgrade (maybe AD2 or something). Can someone answer to this already or does it needs some weeks to discuss this? Thanks in advance.
Staff MEB Posted November 1, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 1, 2014 I think it's too soon for a feature like 3d extrude. Not only it implies considerable work, there's still a lot of features with higher priority to be implemented. Check out the feature roadmap for information about what's coming in the next months. Raskolnikov
It would be a good thing to have, ... when the program it's more developed as MEB says.... let's go first to get a solid basement :) where it can be later built those 3D features and many others. WildBuka
I know I'm late, but I agree with Laserjunge. It would be awesome to have the 3D Extrude and rotation like in AI. I think it's one of the major differences between Affinity Designer and AI now... Having this feature in Affinity would make it the perfect substitute to AI. I hope to see this feature in Affinity Designer someday in a not too distant future! Keep up the good work! Thanks in advance!
swishyhair
I use Xara Designer Pro for easy 3D extrusions: http://www.xara.com/uk/designer-pro/buy/ Zenith1980
Herbert123
Blender supports direct vector export with a SVG plugin and through its freestyle non-realistic renderer. For free. Both can be combined in AF Designer to create shading and great looking edges. Also important: each edge of a 3d object can be manually controlled for vector output, making it extraordinary powerful for technical illustrations. In this sense it is rather more powerful than Illustrator's 3d extrude and revolve functions. No limits as to the shapes of the 3d objects either. And if you need textures, one option is to render out a bitmap of the fills, and combine these with SVG line art. The SVG export plugin generates this out of the box (pure SVG): The freestyle SVG plugin is aimed at line art export (extremely simple example): And why not combine the vector strokes with the bitmap render: The only drawback: you will have to learn a bit about using Blender (loads of tutorials, though!). Or export as a pure SVG with patterned fills: Or a semi-transparent SVG wire: Zenith1980
tjg
Any updates on 3D in Affinity Designer?
Staff MEB Posted October 21, 2019 Staff Share Posted October 21, 2019 Hi tjg, Welcome to Affinity Forums There's no plans to add (true) 3D features to Affinity Designer if that's what you are referring to. There may be improvements to isometric features/funcinality. tjg 1 Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
4CardsMan
@swishyhair - I loved Xara and I used it until Affinity came out. But I gave up on Windows, so I can't run Xara anymore. I haven't much need for 3D, but it would be nice to add depth to text or a logo.
Staff MEB Posted August 17, 2020 Staff Share Posted August 17, 2020 Hi 4CardsMan, Welcome to Affinity Forums You can already add depth to text using Layer effects - the FX icon on the bottom of the Layers panel (or the Effects tab: menu View > Studio> Effects) - look for the 3D and Bevel/Emboss sections. Some examples below: Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
