Am I being particularly dumb today or is this page a bit opaque (pun intended) in terms of showing how to achieve a greyscale channel mask?

https://affinity.help/photo2/en-US.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Layers/LayerMasks.html&title=Layer masks

I have my b/w layer and I want to set that as an alpha channel for another layer. Nothing I'm doing gets me where I want to go and this page from the manual is of no help.

Coming from PS and some other software, masking and alpha in Affinity were mysteries to me for a while. I wrote the following in an attempt to help demystify it. I don't know if it answers your questions or helps, but perhaps it's worth a look.

2024 MacBook Pro M4 Max, 48GB, 1TB SSD, Sequoia OS, Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher v1 & v2, Adobe CS6 Extended, LightRoom v6, Blender, InkScape, Dell 30" Monitor, Canon PRO-100 Printer, i1 Spectrophotometer, i1Publish, Wacom Intuos 4 PTK-640 graphics tablet, 2TB OWC SSD USB external hard drive.
