How can I remove the document spread image in the navigation tab (on my computer it is in the lower right corner). In my case, the image is taking up way too much valuable real estate for the function it provides.

You can't remove it but you can hide the panel and set the view magnification with the Context Toolbar (with the Zoom or View tools selected), with the menu commands, or more visually with your mouse or trackpad. However, you wouldn't be able to create or delete view points with the panel closed.
