BACKGROUND

I'm editing a game asset for a student project I'm working on -- and I've been using the following features for viewport navigation a lot:

  • Save current View Point (no shortcut binding available?)
  • Move to Previous View Point (reassigned to F5)
  • Move to Next View Point (reassigned to F6)

Attached are a couple of screenshots of the navigator panel and the "View"-menu, where the related options can be found.

QUESTION

So, I can't find an available keyboard shortcut binding for the "Save current View Point" action anywhere. Does one not exist?

OUTRO

The ability to move between "saved views" is very nice, but -- not having a shortcut for the "save"-action requires A LOT of mouse clicking for dropdowns and buttons selections in the navigation pane. It's a bit crazy.

So what we really need, are shortcut bindings for the following actions:

  • Save current View Point
  • Delete current View Point

Clearly shortcut actions for moving from current to next and previous already exist (as listed earlier) -- but these essential actions that create and remove existing views, are simply nowhere to be found.

Having these added, would resolve most of my issues with "view point navigation". So, if they don't exist already (but I've been unable to find them), can we have them?

Cheers, AgentSam

Welcome to the Affinity forums, @AgentSam.

Shortcuts in Affinity today are generally provided for items accessed via the Menu (such as you show in your screenshot #4) but not for items in the panels, so I would not expect there to be any shortcut for that action since it isn't driven by the Menu.

You could create a topic in the Feedback & Suggestions section of the forums where the developers and planners look for customer requests, or if someone else has already asked for this there you could post in their topic to add your agreement.

Welcome to the Affinity forums, @AgentSam.

Thanks for the welcome. 😃

I think I'm going to have a bunch of questions and, amm, "feedback" to give on the Affinity product line. As I keep working in these apps, I keep seeing more and more half-implemented, oddly implemented, or just "not working as one might reasonably expect" features (based on experience in "the other industry standard alternative").

USECASE PREVIEW (of something that needs to be looked at)

The following paragraph is not to be continued here, just a "sneak peak / rant" of what I'm seeing as a user:

Just to give a hint of what I'm referring to: create a rectangle, make it semi-transparent, add an "outer glow" effect, and what do you see? It's NOT an outer glow, the glow will also cover the ENTIRE AREA of the object, as seen through the semitransparent object. Not only was the outer glow added, but now the entire object is tinted by the color of the glow. Oh great. That is not how it works in, amm, "the alternative", and not what one would expect. And now you're faced with the problem of "How do I remove and prevent the outer glow from affecting the inside area of the semitransparent object". Achh! Oh, well, just a preview of what I'm facing with these products.)

Sidenote: I want to love the Affinity range of apps, but sometimes just even the simplest things in Affinity Photo become insanely convoluted. It's frustrating.

Yea, that seems to be the case. Which is odd, since the current implementation has the creation and deletion of these "View Points" in the panel, but has the "navigation" in the menu. So, I dunno, someone didn't think this through it feels like.

Sidenote: Many other applications allow creating and moving between viewpoints using shortcuts, such as:

  • CTRL+[1-9] = Save View Point
  • [1-9] = Go to View Point

Simple, effective, direct... instead of how AP does it.. create a view point (from a panel), move from current to prev or next (via keyboard), delete a viewpoint (from panel).. Pff! Ridiculous, convoluted and slow!!! And makes me grumpy. 😃

Yea, thanks. I'll do that and I'll reference this post there too. I did wonder if this forum was the correct place to post about it, since the topic was as much a "support question" as a "feature request", I suppose. Sigh.. I do hope they listen to user-feedback on these things. (Sorry for coming across so grumpy, at the moment.)
