Bill_Bailey Posted April 1 Posted April 1 (edited) When I export or save JPEG files in Affinity Photo 2.6.0 and then try to open those files in the Windows Photos application (version 2025.11030.12002.0), an error message appears at the top of the photo saying, "Sorry, Photos can't open this file because the format is currently unsupported, or the file is corrupted." See attached photo. This problem did not occur prior to Affinity 2.6. If I export the photo from Affinity 2.6 as a PNG file, everything works fine, and Photos does not throw up any errors. I have tens of thousands of JPEG files that I need to be able to edit in AfPhoto and view (or have other people view) on Windows PCs, so this is a significant problem. I've attached a file showing the JPEG export options which AfPhoto is using on my computer. I don't think I've changed any of these options. Now it may be that the problem is on Microsoft's side, but cursory research online did not turn up any other users having this issue. Is anyone else having this issue? Bill_Bailey Posted April 1 Author Posted April 1 Thanks for the response, Carl. I've uploaded one of the problematic JPEG files to the original post. Quote
carl123 Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Thanks the forum software has no problem with it and I can also open it in Windows Photo But when uploading to the forum the forum software can change the displayed JPG slightly So, to ensure we have the original JPG to work with can you zip that JPG file and upload the zip file to the forum It can then be unzipped and tested knowing it has not been changed by the forum software in any way Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. carl123 Posted April 1 Posted April 1 I can open the unzipped file in Photos OK - same version as yours (2025.11030.12002.0) I am opening the file by dragging from File Explorer into Photos, are you doing it the same or a different way? Bill_Bailey Posted April 1 Author Posted April 1 I open the files by double-clicking in File Explorer or by right-clicking in File Explorer and selecting "Open with..." | Photos. If you are able to open my file without any issues, then the problem is obviously on my end. Any ideas on where to start to fix this? Can AfPhoto be "repaired"? Should I re-install? Thanks for your assistance! Quote

I don't think it's an AFPhoto problem as your JPG works OK for me, so you may want to wait for a member of the support staff or another user to advise further You might though want to check that you can open the JPG with any other picture editor on your PC like Paint etc Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. NotMyFault Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Did you install any „codec packs“ in windows? I would recommend trying to do a windows repair installation. This doesn’t look like a issue of Affinity, more like Windows issue. a smaller step: create a new user account on your PC, login with this account and try if issue persists. Often user settings (registry etc) get corrupted and a fresh user profile solves many issues. mopperle Posted April 1 Posted April 1 I also can not open it in Photos (or the legacy version of it). But I can open it n any other software I have (PS, Irfanview XnView...) So IMHO more a Windows problem and the Microsoft Photo app, IMHO the most stupid piece of software. PaulEC 1 Quote Regards, Otto Affinity Suite v2.6.x - Windows 11 Pro

mopperle Posted April 1 Posted April 1 I digged a bit deeper. With ExifToolGUI the file is also not displayed, but no error given. But when I open the file in another viewer and export it as jpeg with only XMP Metadata removed, it is displayed correctly in ExifTolGUI and Windows Photoviewer. So there is a problem with the XMP Metadata, but only Photoviewer stumbles over this. David in Яuislip 1 Quote Regards, Otto Affinity Suite v2.6.x - Windows 11 Pro

David in Яuislip Posted April 1 Posted April 1 (edited) Windows 11 Version 24H2 Installed on 17/03/2025 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.54.0 so pretty much uptodate Photos 2025.11030.12002.0 can't read it, neither can Paint, more importantly, the metadata is not shown in Explorer I think it's an incompatibility between the xmp metadata that Photo has written and Microsoft's interpretation If xmp metadata is removed or modified with exiftool then it works. Until this is fixed, assuming you don't use ratings, you can quickly use exiftool -xmp:Rating=1 IMG_8356.jpg Still, as a famous sage once wrote, "the Microsoft Photo app, IMHO the most stupid piece of software." mopperle Posted April 1 Posted April 1 I just exported several raw files (Canon CR3, CR2, iPhone dng) adding IPTC metadata and everything went fine. Every viewer incl. Windows displays it correct. Quote Regards, Otto Affinity Suite v2.6.x - Windows 11 Pro
