pbbailey Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Hi, Yes. I'm very green to Publisher. I'm used to Adobe InDesign. I don't understand why, when I create master pages, I see a massive spread of them right before me. They don't seem to be based on the page I've just worked on. What's the order of creating master pages? And, is there a different master page for a right-hand page versus a left-hand page? I'm working on the first page, a right-hand page. How can I change the text frame's position a bit more away from the spine? I don't want it centered. Then, of course, I want to do the same for a left page. Why can't I create a master page from the page I've created on the screen right now? So, basically, yeah, I'm confused about master pages. I'm creating a small book for a friend of mine, 6 x 9 inches. I want text frames with a margin away from the spine. I want text to flow freely, of course, from page to page—excepting, of course, the title page. Thank you, Peter Quote

It might help if you explained exactly how you are creating master pages, step by step. A screenshot or video would also help clarify things. But just guessing, if you are using V2.6 & you click on the Add Master button in the Pages panel's Master Pages section or right-click on a Master page thumbnail there, in the Spread tab, are you changing the Page count field to any number >1? If so, you are adding pages to the spread, so for instance setting it to 3 creates a 3 page spread. 2 hours ago, pbbailey said: They don't seem to be based on the page I've just worked on. Are you talking about a document page (one shown in the Pages section of the Pages panel) or a master page in the Master Pages section? If the latter, are you using the Duplicate Selected Master button (the middle of the 3) or what? Because this option isn't implemented in APub. – Instead, you need to select the entire page content -> cut -> and paste it on a new master page (which you need to create before pasting). paleolith and R C-R 2 Quote macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1

pbbailey Posted March 19 Author Posted March 19 Thanks. OK. Well, here I am trying to create a master page. Nothing happens. Please refer to this simple video. I am using version 2.6.0. Do I get my spine margins by simply changing the inside margins? Would the left margins of a right-hand page automatically change to be the right margins of a left-hand page? If I am right about that, there is nothing (no document) to add a Master Page to. pbbailey Posted March 19 Author Posted March 19 OK. So, I create the document pages before the master pages? For such a sophisticated app, that seems counter intuitive to me. But I’ll try that. It appears, as shown in my video, that I can’t create master pages without there being document pages there. Do I create a right and a left page separately? Quote
R C-R Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Just now, pbbailey said: OK. So, I create the document pages before the master pages? No. You just need to create a new document, like by using the File > New menu item or its keyboard shortcut. Doing that will give you the opportunity to use presets, favorites, even templates you have created, including setting the number of document pages & if there should be a default master. pbbailey Posted March 19 Author Posted March 19 Duuh. Yeah. Sorry for my stupidity. I got so flustered with my existing document with 20 master pages icons, I just closed it all. I’ll try this again tomorrow. Thanks for your patience. Quote

Also note when creating a new document, a first "Default master" page or spread may be automatically created. This blank master will be automatically applied to all pages/spreads specified in the "New..." dialog window once the document is created. I mean this honestly due to my own experiences. There is a very comprehensive video tutorial by Elaine Giles with an index from which you can jump directly to certain topics, if needed. d.
