Chapter Numbers

Is there an easy way to add chapter numbers? I created them manually as I was creating my text but I want to add chapters at the beginning and maybe rearrange the order and it means I will have to manually change them.

You can use the ‘Follow’ button to follow a topic without posting to it.

You can create a section for each chapter using the Section Manager window. While there are not automatic section numbers, you can use the Section Name option to number your chapters. Then you can insert the Section Name field into a master page text frame using the Text > Insert > Fields > Section Name command to display the chapter number automatically on every page.

I might be misunderstanding but I think that would mean that I would have to rename the Sections if I rearranged them. Which is basically the problem I am trying to avoid. With the added work of making sections. Am I misunderstanding something?

Yes, that's correct.

An alternative approach would be to use a running list (aka global list). With this, you'd insert a numbered paragraph on the first page of each chapter without using sections. Then if you moved chapter 7 before chapter 6, the numbers would change automatically. It's a bit more complicated to set up but once you've done it then it will just work. I've provided the steps to do this in my Publisher manual which you can download free from this forum.

The ‘Share’ and ‘Follow’ buttons are near the top or bottom of the page, depending on your screen size and orientation.
