After updating to 2.6 I have not been able to save edits to Apple Photos. I am running Sonoma 14.7.4 on a 2019 27" IMac. Regardless of RAW or jpeg, iPhone or Canon r62, I get the same error message - Unable to save changes for "Edit in Affinity Photo" - An  error occurred while saving. Please try again later.

Hi @peter gerken and welcome to the forums. Does the same thing happen if you choose Save As instead of Save?

Where is the folder you are trying to save to located? Your internal drive, an external drive, a network drive, or a cloud? Serif recommends saving to a folder on your internal drive that isn't synced to a cloud - by default, folders such as Desktop and Documents are synced to iCloud.

I do save to iCloud myself (I just make lots of backups) so if you do, ensure Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files & Folders for each of the apps has access iCloud and the other folders.

Hi Mike

I save to Photos Library on an external drive because the file doesn't fit on my 1 TB internal drive and I don't use iCloud for photos. I choose Save. Save As is greyed out. As I mentioned, the problem only started after updating to 2.6. So I'm contemplating going back to 2.5.7 until the problem is solved but I don't know how to do it.

Save As should not be greyed out and should always be enabled if Save is enabled. Can you share a screenshot?

You can revert to 2.5.7 but I don't recommend it - IMO, this is a glitchy thing and not something specific to 2.6.0. Serif doesn't recommend saving to external drives exactly because of issues with saving files. (Yes it should work but there have been glitches like this in the past which is why they recommend saving internally.) But to save to the external drive, you might need to grant Affinity permission to access it. Here's a suggestion from Serif:

Save As was not greyed out before I updated. I granted Affinity Photo Full Disk Access in my Privacy & Security settings but the problem remains. Since my photo file is too large to put on the internal drive I need to revert back to 2.5.7 since I always access Affinity Photo via the Affinity Photo extension in my Apple Photo app.  I don't think this is a "glitchy" thing but rather a direct consequence of updating to 2.6 since the problem arose right after updating. So I need to know how to revert back to 2.5.7.

Hi @peter gerken,

I may be wrong but I think the issue is simply that you've not closed the file in Affinity Photo before trying to Save the file in Apple Photos as indicated by the text below the Photo in Apple Photos...

I see the same behaviour in 2.5.7 and 2.6.0 when the file isn't closed in Affinity Photo first and Save As is greyed out in both 2.5.7 and 2.6.0...

Let us know if this is indeed the case...

Hi @peter gerken,

I'm glad that resolved the issue...

I never edit files directly from Apple Photos in Affinity Photo but my assumption based on the Help file is that Save is the only option which does make sense...

To edit an item from Apple Photos using Affinity Photo 2’s full toolset

  1. Click Edit on Apple Photos’ toolbar
  2. Click the Extensions button—an ellipsis in a circle—on the toolbar
  3. Select Edit in Affinity Photo 2
  4. Edit the image using Affinity Photo 2's full toolset
  5. Select File>Save
  6. Select File>Close
  7. In Apple Photos, click Save Changes
