I have a workflow for stacking astrophotography images where I need to supply a mask of the foreground and sky. This is done by exporting a greyscale tiff file with black pixels representing the foreground and white pixels representing the sky.

  1. I open a tiff image in Photo
  2. I create a selection of the sky region
  3. I fill with primary colour (white)
  4. I invert the selection
  5. I fill with secondary colour (black)

At this point, when I export, the preview fails to generate any pixels:

The exported image is correct, it's just the preview in the export dialog that doesn't work

Does the original tif file (A1206418.tif) preview on export immediately after you open it. (i.e. with no edits)

If not, where did that original tif file come from?

Can you upload the afphoto file (before exporting)?
which document color format/profile do you use?

Yeah good question - the original tiff file doesn't generate a preview:

It's come straight from Lightroom.

If you could upload it to the forum it may help the support staff figure out why it does not preview?

Sadly I don't have enough storage left to upload here - if one of the staff provides a link I can upload there.

For the colour format, I'm using Adobe RGB (1998) and RGBA/16.

If you mean forum storage space just let the support staff know and they will increase your current allocation. They are not going to prevent users from uploading files that are needed to assist with the support of their products

At this point, when I export, the preview fails to generate any pixels:

This is a known issue on Mac and happens when the Scale for the Previewed image falls below around 10%... If you zoom the image in the Preview Window, which is also easier said than done because the Width field maintains focus and is overridden when using Cmd 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 9 you will see the preview but you should be able to zoom (somewhat erratically) using your mouse...

Both issues appear to have been fixed in 2.6...

Thanks @Hangman

If I use Cmd + 1 it does render correctly, but that's obviously at 100% zoom which means I can hardly see any of the image:

I'm using 2.6 and it's not working so looks like it's not been entirely fixed - is there a bug report somewhere I can add to? I did search before posting but didn't find anything.

Thanks all for your help!

Which bit isn't working in 2.6...

You should also be able to use Cmd +/-

The preview from my first post - it works when zoomed in but when viewing the whole image it doesn’t render.

Cmd + 1/2/3 etc does work.

I'm unsure whether it's influenced by the display resolution but for me, in 2.5.7 the same size Tiff file (8,640 x 5,760) doesn't preview at 4% but in 2.6.0 it does so I'm slightly unsure why the difference... What is your monitor resolution?

Have you tried a mouse zoom with the Alt Key held down?

Interesting, I’m using my laptop display which is 3,024 x 1,964.

I’ll see if things change when I hook up to a monitor

Interestingly my laptop display is only 2,056 x 1,329 but yes, let me know if you see the same issue when hooked up to a monitor...

OK, I seem to have nailed it down. When in full screen mode it does not work, but when out of full screen mode it does work:

This is still using my laptop (not an external monitor). Do you get similar results @Hangman?

Good catch, yes, I see the same even after exiting full-screen mode which then requires a Photo reboot to reinstate the preview out of full-screen mode...
