Problems with updating linked AFdesign file in Publisher

I have linked Designer files in a Publisher document. When I update a file in Designer it does not update in Publisher unless I close Publisher then open it again. I have 'update automatically' checked in settings which works for a jpg image but it does not update a Designer file. If I click on the file the resource manager doesn't allow updating, the option is grayed out even though the file is not updated. Designer and Publisher are version 2.4 but Designer is 2.4.2 and Publisher is 2.4.1. on Windows 10.

Have you tried simply closing and reopening the file? We shouldn’t even have to do that, of course, but it seems preferable to quitting APub and relaunching it first.

I closed the Designer file but didn't reopen it. Closing it didn't update the file in Publisher.

I also noticed that when I relaunched Publisher the changed Designer file wasn't updated at first. It took about a minute then the update showed up. The Designer files are large, maybe that has something to do with it.
