M J Maguire Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Hi I'm having a slight issue with text flow on my project. I have created the Text Frame on the left side of the Master Page, and another on the right side and linked them. And this has been ok on the first section break (i-iii) until I made a second section break starting at page 1 and now the flow seems to be jumping pages and not flowing from the new section break: page 1 onwards, 1,2...etc. Any help would be highly appreciated - I'm a newbie, so it's probably a rudimentary thing, but I need to make a number of section breaks throughout the book so want to keep the text flowing to each consecutive page on each new break. Thank you Quote
MikeTO Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Section breaks in Affinity have nothing to do with text flow. All they do is start a new section on a specific page, regardless of whether text flows between them or not. I highly recommend not flowing text between sections because the section breaks don't move with the text. A good best practice when using sections is to start a new story (a series of linked text frames) at the start of each section. You'll find more information on how to set up sections in my free Publisher manual, available from this forum at the link in my signature. M J Maguire Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 MikeTo Thank you for your help and I will look at the manual - really appreciated. Sorry another schoolboy question: With regard to a new section break, I take it I only have to make a text box on the first page of the new section within the margins. And when I paste the text in, it should flow on to however many pages? Or do I need to make a text box on the first two pages of the new section? Thanks again for your help Quote

Publisher never automatically flows overset (overflowing) text in a text frame. You must do that on your own but it's easy with AutoFlow - hold Shift and click the Text Flow Out control toward the bottom right corner. It will be red if there is overset text. AutoFlow will create as many more pages of linked text frames as required. BTW, it's a best practice to create text frames for long documents on the master page instead of on the actual page. That way you won't need to create a text frame on the first page of the new section, and if you later decide to change your margins, you only have to change them for the master page and all pages will update automatically. If you've already created your pages with frames on those pages, it may take a few minutes to reverse course but the investment would be worth it in the long run. You can just delete all the pages except the first page in each section (assuming they're all one story, one series of linked frames) which will not delete any text because it will be overset in the first frame of each story. Draw the frames on the master and if facing pages, link the left and right master frames. Then go to the story, click in the frame on the document page, select and cut all the text. Delete the frame from the document page, click in the master frame below it, and paste the text back in. It will be overset but you can use AutoFlow to create the rest of the pages and frames for that section.
