ThorneyJohn Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I have my new documents set to a nudge distance of 0.01 inches and a modifier nudge (shift+cursor key) of 0.1 inches. When moving an object, the modifier nudge works as expected, moving the object by 0.1 inch. However, the regular nudge does not. Instead of moving the object by the desired distance of 0.01 inch, it moves it by a distance equal to 1 dot, as set by the document's dpi. For example, if the document's dpi is set to 300, it takes three cursor key taps to actually move the object by the desired 0.01 inch. If the document dpi is set to 400, it takes 4 cursor key taps to move it by 0.01 inch. In order for the actual cursor key tap to match the nudge distance desired, I have to set the document's dpi to 100; then it works as desired. I am concerned, however, that setting the document dpi that low may cause other issues, such as possible banding with blends or transparencies? I could, of course, be misunderstanding the importance of document dpi and the answer (though unintuitive) may be staring at me in the face. Of course, the solution would be to divorce the nudge distance per key tap from the document's dpi and to have the nudge distance obey the setting under Settings/Tools/Nudge Distance. You could even go a step further, like some of your competitors do, and have a "micro nudge" feature to move something by one-tenth of the regular nudge distance when pressing something like "Ctrl+Cursor Key" (in my case, this micro nudge would move the object by 0.001 inch per key tap). App: Affinity Designer for Windows 2.5.7 Reproducible?: Yes, every time. Also testable to see a single key tap matches dpi instead of nudge distance by simply changing the document dpi. Does it happen for a new document?: Yes Quote
Hangman Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Hi @ThorneyJohn, I've tested this on Windows and Mac, and I've been unable to replicate the behaviour. Both the nudge and modifier nudge are working correctly regardless of the document dpi so I'm slightly unsure why you're seeing the unexpected behaviour... This is a screen recording on Mac but I'm seeing identical behaviour on Windows... Could you make a similar screen recording so we can see what might be going on... ThorneyJohn Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 Hi @Hangman, My screen recording is attached. I explain the whole thing in a voice over. Sorry about the low voice volume, I can't seem to make it record louder. But just in case you can't hear it, in essence, I try to move the box using three different screen dpi settings. While Modified Nudge (shift+cursor) works fine in any dpi setting, I only get a true movement of +/- 0.01 inch when the document dpi is set to 100 (default for the document is 300 dpi). In all other dpi settings tested, the regular non-modifier nudge command moves the box by 1 dpi per keystroke, not 0.01 inch as set in Settings/Tools/Nudge Distance. carl123 Posted February 6 Posted February 6 @ThorneyJohn Good news: I definitely encounter this yesterday in 2.5.7 but I had little time to investigate it fully Bad news: I can't recreate it today. Everything is working as it should Good news: I can recreate it in V1 every time Bad news: I haven't got a scooby doo what's causing it Will need to schedule some time to try to figure out what's going on Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum.
