GarryP Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Replicated with Designer 2.5.7 on Windows 10, but only when applying the style to Artistic Text and Frame Text; other layer types (not all have been tested) seem to have the Effects applied as expected. Tony Yan 1 Quote
Hangman Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Hi @Tony Yan, This is working for me on both Windows and Mac... When you apply your style Ctrl-Click or marquee select the Target or select the target text first and then Ctrl-Click the Source... Or, to put that another way, why do we need to Ctrl+click on Artistic Text, or Frame Text, to apply the whole style when we only need to click to apply the style to other types of layers. What’s the difference between the layer and the “whole frame”? Tony Yan 1 Quote

If you select the target layer first and then click the source text all styles are applied to the target without needing to hold the Ctrl Key... When selecting the source text first I believe you are only loading the character or paragraph styles and local formatting which don't include things like Effects since they're not part of a character or paragraph style though I'm sure if that's not the case someone will correct me... GarryP Posted February 3 Posted February 3 I think I might need a member of staff to clarify what’s supposed to happen and explain why there’s a difference, without me going through all kinds of tests to try and work it out for myself. Quote

GarryP Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Another one onto the pile of work for the documentation team I think. Quote
carl123 Posted February 3 Posted February 3 I think text layers have 2 main attributes, those styes that are applied to the text characters and those that are applied to the text frame itself Colours, strokes, etc can be applied differently to individual characters in a text frame Stuff like Effects and (layer) Opacity are applied to the whole text frame (not individual characters) When you don't use the CTRL key only character attributes are applied When you use the CTRL key both character and text frame attributes are applied And yes, the help file is totally unhelpful Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. Old Bruce Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Here on my Mac I looked at the Status Bar, after loading the Style Picker, and see that I can Click and Drag or use the Command key to apply to the objects I drag over or to the object I click on. GarryP Posted February 4 Posted February 4 18 hours ago, carl123 said: When you don't use the CTRL key only character attributes are applied When you use the CTRL key both character and text frame attributes are applied That sounds like it could be a reasonable explanation to me but I can’t be bothered to do the experimentation to prove or disprove it, and I don’t think any of us should be expected to. If any functionality works differently with different types of layers, especially when that functionality is being used at such a ‘basic level’ (e.g. simply clicking on different types of layer), then that should be documented in the Help rather than it only being discoverable via trial and error, or looking in the forums. If the software is working as expected, and there’s no bug in the code, then I hope Serif look at this bug report as being about a ‘bug’ in the documentation/UI instead. Quote
Staff NathanC Posted February 4 Staff Posted February 4 FX is a layer attribute and, therefore, cannot be applied to individual words or letters within a single text object, whereas character styling attributes such as the colour, stroke etc. can be applied to individual words and letters within a frame. When hovering over text the picker cursor updates with a small 'T' icon to indicate it's modifying these character attributes either via a single click or drag, this 'T' icon next to the sampler disappears when using the CTRL/CMD modifier since the picked style will be applied to the whole frame, inclusive of FX. I'd agree that the help article doesn't really explain this so I'll log it with the docs team to look at. Hangman and GarryP 1 1 Quote
