(v2.5.7) I have a plain circle, black line, no fill, no gradient. All I want to do is put text along this circular path using the Artistic Text Tool ("T"). But when I put the text on the path, Designer immediately fills the original circle with an unwanted gradient while allowing me to type my text. The text behavior is fine. But I cannot figure out how to clear-out the gradient filling the circle. Thanks for any pointers.

Pic showing artistic text element indicating the unwanted, un-asked for gradient fill within the circle. When it converts a shape into a text path, the toolbars no longer show the shape's line and fill tools at all.

I can't duplicate that here in AD on my Mac so if possible can you post a document with just the plain circle & let us know what font & anything else relevant to the text you want to put on that path?

Also, if not using AD please confirm which app you are using & what OS.

Affinity Designer 2.5.7 on MacOS 14.7.1

  • Attached file has two identically dimensioned curves.
  • Ignore curve with grad
  • “Curve intended for text” should remain as-is… but duplicate it, move its duplicate outside the “existing group”
  • Apply art text tool to the duplicate, Hiragino Mincho ProN font, 16 point, beginning around 11:00 on the outside of the curve, typing “A Selection of Treatments”
  • When you finish typing the text, and click elsewhere (like the move tool), you’ll see the art text get a gradient fill similar to the “don’t use” curve (seems utter coincidence).

I solved this issue by copying the intended curve to a new/blank AD file. Then performing the art text. No unwanted grad happens. Then I copy that back into my original file. It remains just text without grad, as hoped for.

Perhaps that shape element and its grad neighbor were corrupted. I've been working this file for 2-3 years, thru various AD upgrades. Anyway, the workaround suffices. Perhaps I should copy the entire contents into a new/clean AD file if that helps chase away any other corruptions?

Hello

I try to follow the different steps and see no unwanted gradient fill. The only thing is that the vignette of the corresponding layer in the layers panel show a gradient like on your screenshot.

I can see the issue but I have no idea how it got in that state.

Try select your group in Layers panel, Copy, New from Clipboard. Then I think it works correctly, so there is probably a problem in the document.

If you go through the steps as mentioned above in Well.Spokin’s earlier post and then switch to Publisher you can see, in the Text Frame Panel, that the Fill is a gradient (which can be removed).

As with carl123, I have no idea how that gradient fill got there (maybe it was copied from an earlier layer), but this might help with the diagnosis.

I'm showing the same behavior on a file with multiple artboards. The elipse path is filled and I can't get rid of the fill. I created another text on a path in a new document and it behaved correctly. I then copied the good text on a path and pasted it in the artboard document and it solved the problem. Since others have experienced this issue, perhaps it should be looked into a little deeper.

I’ve not seen anything in this thread which convinces me that there is a problem with the software as it could have come about accidentally but within expected behaviour.

The more example documents that people have to examine the easier it should be for them to try and figure out what has happened, so if you can share the document with the issue extant then that might help.

Sorry I cannot share the document. One possible hint is that the behavior exhibited itself on an artboard instead of a document without artboards.

There are some things which work differently with Artboards as opposed to without Artboards, and sometimes this is by design and sometimes it isn’t

Without a document to test there’s not really anything to look into. If we can’t replicate it we can’t know what the situation is.

Would you be able to share a cut-down version of the document which only contains the layers which allow you to demonstrate the problem?

I just did a test by creating two new documents, one using an artboard and the other without. I then created text on a path on each using an ellipse for the path. In each case, the ellipse was not filled in as expected. My conclusion is that my original file referenced above is a bit corrupted but easily worked around. Not worth further investigation, I appreciate your great support.
