I come from PSP, and to fill a text (or any vector), I just need to choose the "pattern" as a fill, like I would use a solid color or a gradient.

In Affinity Photo (on Windows), the steps I found are:

  • add the pattern tile as a pixel layer
  • Layer > New Pattern layer from Selection
  • remove the pixel layer
  • "clip" the pattern layer into the text

Is that the most straightforward way to go? It seems that it requires 4 steps instead of 1 so maybe there is a simpler way?

Can a "full-size" seamless pattern be created and used from the Assets?

Hi CaroleA,

you could use the Gradient Tool. On the context toolbar: Type: Bitmap.

Is this what you are looking for?

After some trials, I guess it does work. It is far from intuitive to choose a GRADIENT tool when one wants to add a PATTERN on TEXT!

I am not sure if it is more straightforward though, but it is one way to go.

It sounds like you already have the pattern as a pixel object. If so, why can't you just drag it into the clipping position of the text layer?

I am not sure. Do I? The pattern is a jpg file on my computer (or maybe in the Assets).

What steps would you take? (I am still learning about Affinity so I am still unaware of some tools, commands, and steps)

If  it is a JPEG file then it is a pixel object. If you add it to your document, you can just drag it into the clipping position of your text. Do you know how to do that?

Yes, but if the seamless tile is not covering the whole text, that would not fill the whole text, correct?

Yes, if the tile size is smaller than the text, it won't fill all of it.

If it’s a seamless tile, why not make use of that fact by tiling it? For example, a 2 by 2 grid of seamless tiles will seamlessly cover four times the area covered by a single tile.

Yes, but I am just wondering if I am doing it correctly. Unlike a solid color, I cannot just "pick the pattern" and it fills, or can I?

So far, what I would know is either to add the seamless "tile", then create a pattern layer, and then clip it to the text OR go through the GRADIENT tool to access that seamless tile.

Are those the most straightforward way to fill the text with that seamless pattern? Or am I missing another way that would require fewer steps?
