After tracing the letter "P" with the pen tool, I end up with two layers.  I then select both layers, click on the "Subtract" feature so when I fill in the letter "P" with a color, the middle transparent area of the P doesn't fill in as well.

This isn't working the the letter "B" which has two transparent areas that I don't want to fill in with color.  After tracing the letter "B" with the pen tool and selecting all three layers, what do I do next so that when I fill in this letter with a color, the two transparent areas do not fill in as well, since selecting "subtract" only keeps on of the transparent areas from filling in with color?

Make sure the "B" is at the bottom of the three layers.
