I am trying to follow the steps to do an astrophotography stack, but no matter what I do, I get nothing usable.  I am using FITS from Unistellar Odyssey and one dark, which is all you get from the Unistellar telescopes.  This is supposed to be the Horsehead Nebula.Horsehead stacked.afphoto  What am I doing wrong?  This happens with everything I tried.  Thanks

Welcome to the forums @echiriff,

Assuming that you're referring to the green cast on the stacked result, I'd recommend checking out the post from our expert James below on correcting this.

Hello Nathan,

It's not only the green cast.  I saw James' reply and followed the steps he recommended.  That's what I ended up with after following those steps.  Sometimes, I end up with something like the first image.  I can use the Unistellar telescope's internally stacked image and enhance it with Affinity (right image), but not when I try with the FITS (left image), which should give me a better result.  The image is turned counterclockwise wise and cropped.  There are tracking circles from the alt-azimuth mount.  Any help would be appreciated.

Also, many times, after I crop the image and post it to the Facebook user group, they look grainy and sometimes pixelated.  Not sure why.  It doesn't happen with regular photos, only with the astronomy photos.  I think it has to do with the fact that sometimes you have to crop to enlarge small and faint objects, but maybe there is a way to fix this by changing the size and resolution.  Do you have any comments about this?

Thanks,

Edgar

If you could upload a copy of the FITS files pre-stack, we can explore possible reasons for this, I've added a private upload link below.

As far as I'm aware, the site compresses any uploads to improve page loading times and save space. It also converts uploaded lossless PNGs over to JPEG to compress them, which may explain why high-res astrophotography photos are more significantly affected than others, the website below contains some tips on optimising files pre-upload. I'd also recommend ensuring that you're using RGB/8 sRGB 2.1 to ensure any out-of-gamut colours are not getting clipped if you haven't been already.

Hello Nathan,

I am now uploading a set of 675 Lights and one Dark from the Unistellar Odyssey Pro raw download.  I think it finished since the page went blank.  There should be two folders.  I appreciate the time to try to resolve this issue.  Hopefully, a workflow or script can make the final image work.  By the way, I have all of James' scripts (I have trouble with some requiring multiple clicks to run).  I really like Affinity's ability to do astrophotography and photo editing within the same app.

Thanks for your response to the Facebook upload question.  I will check the link you provided.

Thank you again to you and James,

Edgar

Hi, I wanted to add that I use Affinity from within Apple Photos, and it always fails to save the image back to it.  I have to export it and then import it into Apple Photos.  Although this is a workaround, I end up with duplicate photos.  Any idea when this will be fixed?  Also, Sometimes Burn doesn't do what I expect, even at 100%.

Thanks

Edgar

This is an issue currently logged internally, but not one we can provide a timeframe for a fix unfortunately, I've bumped the existing issue with your report.

Ok, thank you, Nathan.  While I am at this, are there any plans to any AI similar to Photoshop?

We've recently released the Machine Learning Based Object and Subject selection tools in the 2.6 beta, but we don't have any news to share regarding any other ML or AI based features at the moment.

As I understand it, these ML selection tools are only available for Macs & some iPads with Apple silicon CPU's, so Windows users & users like me running Intel-powered Macs won't be able to use them even after 2.6 goes retail, right?

Ok, I'm glad I have a Mac then. 😃

One powered with an Apple "M" series processor, not an Intel one?

That's correct, the ML features will only be available on Apple Silicon based Macs and iPads on 2.6's release, but there are no restrictions on Windows.

COMPATIBILITY: Sorry but due to the functions we need to run the Object Selection and Subject Selection functionality, the Machine Learning features only available on Apple Silicon iPads and macOS devices (and those need to be running on a recent macOS, as Catalina, Big Sur and Monterey do not support the required calls). Machine Learning will run on both Windows x64 and Arm64 hardware running Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Thanks for the upload @echiriff can confirm I've got 583 lights and 1 dark. I've raised this with the experts internally and will let you know when I hear back.

Hi Nathan, is there any update on the Unistellar FITS astrophotography post-processing?

Hi @echiriff,

No updates yet; apologies. Our in-house astro expert, James, is often exceptionally busy, so it can take some time for him to get back to us. When I hear back I'll be sure to update ASAP.
