FRNG1 Posted January 24 Posted January 24 On any of the Affinity software, if you open the "Font" tab when editing text, you'll see a few buttons at the top of the dropdown. All, Recent, Used, and Favorites on the left, and TrueType, OpenType, and Variable on the right. Would it be possible to add a feature to add custom groups to those as well? I have a lot of fonts and there's certain things I want to filter, different font styles, fonts that are for personal use only, available for commercial use, etc. Quote
MikeTO Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Hi @FRNG1 and welcome to the forums. Do you use Mac or Windows? On macOS, you can categorize your fonts using Font Book which is included with macOS. Open Font Book and choose File > New Collection. Add your fonts to the collection and then in the Character panel, you'll find a Font Collection list to the left of the Font Family list. You'll be able to choose your new font collection from there. I'm unsure how it's done on Windows these days but somebody else will likely be able to help you if you use Windows. lacerto Posted January 25 Posted January 25 There is nothing like this on Windows, and I think it is unlikely there ever will be (considering that the old Fonts interface is now deemed legacy and the shiny new interface -- I have the latest 24.H2 installed -- is very basic). I am not sure if you would benefit much of the macOS way, either, as I am not sure if the user collections can be selectively exposed within macOS apps when accessing their font lists. The feature you are asking is something that is traditionally covered by font managers, which would make it possible not only to create user-specified collections and expose/hide them to applications by quick installation / uninstallation / activation / deactivation, but also by making them available to supported clients via plugins, etc. [E.g. Extensis claims to be Affinity compatible so you might want to have a look on it -- but not of course a free solution.] Apps like CorelDRAW (available for both Windows and macOS) even make their own Font Manager and allow creating collections that are available within Corel apps (where advanced filtering is available dynamically also collection-wise): Because of these kinds of features are available in font managers, there is no specific need to develop advanced OS based font management, and most apps (like Adobe ones) focus on developing other kinds of, dynamic, font selection tools, based e.g. on similarity of a selected font, and other properties: Quote

Font Book collections created by users are accessible within Affinity for macOS, just not from the Context Bar. There is a Font Collection list beside Font Family in the Character panel and Text Style Editor. lacerto Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Thanks, I had not noticed this. I wrongly assumed that the list is identical with the one that is on the Windows versions: Quote

Mac Font Book users should be aware that (at least the last time I checked) if you create a Font Book collection named "Favorites" it will conflict with Affinity's own in-app Favorites collection, causing some weird issues like the wrong font collection appearing when using the Character Panel's popup Font Collection list, or even an app crash. So what I have done to avoid that is name my FB favorites collection "FB Faves" Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.5.7 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7
