Started a big project and now every time I open the file it loads up and then freezes. Can't select anything, can't move anything, can't do anything. Try to close Affinity Publisher and it freezes and takes a moment. Tried turning off the hardware acceleration and adjusting performance settings - does not help. The file has a lot of images so I added the pages into a new document and removed all the images. It seemed to be working fine. Today I opened the file to start working, thinking that I'll just do all the data entry and text now. Later I will resize and format the images to be smaller and less demanding on the computer. When I tried to start working the file still freezes even with just picture frames and no images. Why?! I worked so hard on this. I have other documents with tons of images that work perfectly fine. I never had to adjust performance settings. It just seems like Affinity hates this one project?!? I mean there aren't even images to slow it down anymore, I don't understand why this would make it freeze. Shouldn't this be a professional level app that can handle hundreds of pages? I have like 60 pages and most of them are blank so far. Please help, what is going on with this? Do I have to just start all over? Can Publisher 2 handle having multiple small images on each page? I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling a previous version and it didn't help either.

I am using Affinity Publisher 2. I am using the latest version 2.5.7 - I also tried using version 2.4.2 but it did not help or show any difference.

I'm not sure about reproducing the problem. Every time I open the file with Affinity Publisher 2 on my computer it freezes. The other project files seem fine. I tried copying the pages onto a new document and then that document has the problem too. In that way I can reproduce the problem. This file and files that have it's pages copied onto them have this issue. I haven't tried completely reproducing it from scratch because doing this project has already taken me a lot of time, before I remake the entire project I wanted to come here and ask.

I am attaching a couple files. "catalog_new2" is the original one that started freezing up. "catalog_work_1" is a new document that had the pages from "catalog_new2" added to it. Then I removed the images so that it wouldn't be to much for my computer, but it still has the same problem. I am very surprised that it still started freezing up after just having picture frame boxes with no images.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro Version 10.0.19045

Hardware Acceleration has been toggled on and off and does not seem to make a difference.

I don't really have a recipe for how this happened, but I wanted to come and ask about it before spending several hours recreating it... if that makes sense.

I don't have screenshots, but I've attached the files.. so hopefully that is enough. I've been working on the same file for several days, and it worked totally fine and then this freezing issue started. I have not changed anything, no updates or otherwise. I do not use any unusual hardware, just my computer and 2 monitors, keyboard, mouse.

Please help, If the file is just corrupted or something, would it make sense that it corrupts the new file that the pages are added to? I really just want to know if I need to just start all over or not, and if I start all over.. will this happen again??

Hi @sleep_815 and welcome to the forums,

Your files open without issue and are very responsive, though obviously, we don't have the Linked images to test your files with.

Can you zip up the images used in the file and upload those so we can check that none of them are causing the freezing issue you are experiencing?

Here is a zipped folder with all the images I used. When I created the original project file, I chose to have images linked instead of embedded. Later (after a couple days of the freezing problem) I made a new document that prefers embedded. I copied all the pages from the original catalog file over and made the images embedded instead of linked and have not had any problems. Is this normal? With linked images it seems like all the small vector icons and other images are too much of a strain on the computer, but with embedded images, even though the publisher file is much larger, it seems to run much more smoothly (this is my experience so far). I have not had any trouble with the new file with embedded images, but still have a lot more work to do. As you can see there are evergreens, shade trees and flowering trees. I still have to do shrubs which is as large as the other three combined. Then I have evergreen shrubs and then possibly perennials, which would be huge. My bosses want to be able to add in plants later, which is also poses a challenge, but say next year they want to add 4 or 5 evergreen trees. They want this designed in a way where I could get the info and then pop the new plants in that section later. So far, it was working beautifully. After getting the hang of publisher 2 (I've really only been using it for a week or two) the work became pretty streamlined and everything was making sense (I'm sure there are more efficient ways, but I developed my own little method). I use a template file to get the info ready and then I copy and paste it into the appropriate slot according to how many lines the description of the plant takes up. I will attach my template file and the working project with embedded files as well just so that you can see what I am talking about and hopefully provide the best feedback. My main question is if I continue using embedded images will I be able to keep making the catalog and have it become much larger without running into the issue of the file / affinity freezing after opening?

"catalog_work3a_modified" - has all three tree sections and seems to work totally fine with all embedded images. I still need to edit a couple things, but these pages are getting close to finished. - this file works and doesn't freeze on me, but I also give it a moment or two after opening up. I'm afraid if I keep adding more to this that eventually it will start freezing.

"TEMPLATE" - this is obviously the template I use. I have this open on another monitor and drop in the plant description info before copy and pasting it into the main project file. I just find that it helps me keep things a bit more organized and I don't have to work so hard to keep the main project in line / formatted correctly. - this file also works fine and does not freeze

Hi @sleep_815,

Many thanks for the files...

I'm not experiencing any issues with your files when Images and SVG files are Linked or Embedded... I did note that your Images are on your internal C Drive and some of your SVG files on your D Drive but I really don't think that would be the reason you're experiencing the freezing problem... Is your D Drive internal or external?

You could try moving the SVG Icons into a folder on your C Drive and relink them but I'm not convinced that will remedy the issue unless your D Drive is external as that can cause issues sometimes...

Your images have all been sensibly sized and are not large so in theory based on the Catalogue you shouldn't run into any issues with the file embedded but equally, you shouldn't run into any issues with them Linked either...

Initially, I would try the above suggestion and let us know whether or not it makes any difference or if you still experience the same freezing issue...
