Ronald N. Tan Posted January 22 Posted January 22 REDACTED to Include that Capture One Pro (C1PRO) don't recognize AFPHOTO file format. How do you do! I "kind of" got the hang of doing compound masks and then it hit me—once I saved and document and reload, the multiple masks that makes up the compound mask is no longer saved! Am I doing something wrong? Is this because I have to save it as AFPHOTO file format and not PSD? Quote

If you're working in Affinity Photo and ever want to access previous edits and readjust, add to or delete them, ALWAYS save in AfPhoto file format, which supports and saves all Affinity features (just as PSD file format supports all Photoshop features). Each file format supports features that the other file format does not. Also, some features that both formats 'support' are implemented differently and aren't necessarily 'transferable'. Thank you @Ldina. I just figured out shortly after I made this post. My compound masking layer masks were not saved, because I process my Nikon RAWs (NEF) straight from Capture One Pro (C1PRO) as a PSD or sometimes a TIFF. Because I am new to the Affinity Suite (AP, AD, AP)—I still have to be a member of Adobe Creative Cloud Photography Plan—I was starting to serious learn AP and actually use the program to retouch my files. Because C1PRO doesn't recognize AFPHOTO file format, I had to export my AFPHOTO as a PSD with full editing layers selected. In other words, there will be more files added in my workflow. Quote
Ldina Posted January 23 Posted January 23 @Ronald N. Tan I wouldn't think Exporting from C1Pro to APhoto as TIFF or PSD should generally be a problem (or alternatively, simply opening a TIFF or PSD previously processed by C1). Most PSD adjustment layers, effects, filters, blend modes, etc, will open fine in AP, but there may be some exceptions if the features applied to the PSD are not supported. If you are just using C1 for development of RAW files, again, I'd think the file, whether PSD or TIFF, should be pretty standard and open fine in AP (but, I don't use C1, so I can't say for sure). You can edit the file in AP all you want and then save an AfPhoto version of your file, which will preserve all your edits, so you can then open and edit later in AP as desired. If C1Pro doesn't recognize afphoto format, then it probably won't be useful after your initial development, unless you save to a file format C1 supports. You can export from AP to PSD format, but as mentioned in my last post, if you use some filter (e.g. Live Filters, Compound Masks, etc) or effect that PSD does not support, it will probably be ignored. When I switched to Affinity, I had to change a few of my long-established workflows. The same would be true for someone switching from Affinity to Adobe. There will always have to be new changes, especially when a longtime established workflow is being changed. It is not a big deal, since I still have to be a CC member because I like the simplicity of and access to Adobe Portfolio and Adobe Fonts. Paying (for me) 119.88 USD annually to access not only PS and LR, but also to aforementioned Portfolio and Fonts is great utility for me. In due time, I hope to become somewhat proficient with Affinity Photo. Prior to joining the Affinity family, I was already a user of Publisher 1.X. I use to do simple setup in Publisher and output to social media use. Phase One, makers of Capture One Pro already made a statement in the feature requests page that they are NOT planning to make their program readable Affinity files. That was a major disappointment—there won't be no "round trip workflow." Quote
