Hi all. I am a traditional artist who has worked as a surface designer for the last 19 years.
I've just canceled my Adobe Photoshop subscription after they raised the price to DOUBLE of what I had been paying.

I created all of my repeat patterns in Photoshop using their Pattern Preview tool (I've never owned Illustrator).

My question is - will Affinity Photo give me the same abilities to create seamless repeat patterns or will I need BOTH Photo and Designer to get the job done?

Thank you!

Affinity Photo offers two options for creating seamless patterns. The first option is to create an empty pattern layer on which you can draw your pattern. And the second option is to create a pattern from a selection.

Affinity Designer also allows you to create patterns. However, these must then be rasterised for use in other files.

Try Affinity Photo and Designer. You will quickly realise the advantages of having both programs.

Bear in mind that two individual licences are more expensive and less flexible than the universal licence. The universal licence can be used on all supported operating systems. The single licence only allows use on the OS for which it was purchased.

Yes. But, of course, certain details may depend on the specific design (tools, workflow etc.) you have created so far and want to redo/reuse in APhoto. There are various video tutorials for pattern creation, most of them use V1 – but note, the particular "Pattern Layer" wasn't implemented in APhoto before V2.

This tutorial uses V2. It shows + comments the entire process for AD, then, from 3:05 min, it quickly demonstrates it in APhoto:

This is why there are demos and this forum, use them in tandem! Take your hardest tasks and figure out how to do them in Affinity Photo and see if you need Designer for it as well and if it all works right through to the end, don't leave any portion out. If you are sending to a print shop for print send one out, make sure the results are what you expect from the files you create.

I totally agree. Buying the full bundle is not expensive (especially compared to a monthly subscription) and you will find tools in both Photo and Designer that you will probably like and use. They work together seamlessly. The full package allows you to use the Apps on Windows, Mac OS and iOS for added flexibility. They have sales a few times per year, which can save even more (if you are willing to wait for one).
