Pictures edited in Photoshop on my Mac OS Sonoma 14.1 appear as total black in my Publisher V2 software. Occasionally, it will work correctly. What am I doing wrong?

This picture appears as total black with a white highlight where the wall lamp is shining. This happens whenever I follow the tutorials on how to upload a picture. Uploading never works. I can't get it to look normal. I have the same problem with most of my pictures.

What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the forums @Frankward,

Could you share a copy of a sample .afpub file where you have experienced this issue on image placement? This may shed some clarity on why this issue is occurring.

Thanks

How do I make an afpub? I con't do it in Photoshop. I have  noticed that some of my files turn into afpub, but I don't know how.

Also, when I loaded an afpub file, it still turned to black.

When you save from Publisher, you will create an afpub file. Saving from Designer will be afdesign and from Photo will be afphoto.

Just copy that black photo to a new blank document and save that as a test file to upload to this forum. Ensure the image is embedded and not linked (you can use Window > Resource Manager to confirm and change it).

What format is the photo you imported? PSD, JPG, TIFF?

KazuoOhnoFloDanc.thumb.jpg.d4f7388091c1f29f1357286080469916.jpgI have tried to download afpub, jpg, psd and tiffs to my Publisher V2 with only black results. When I first started using the program I had success with a couple of photo files. Now I can't get any picture to appear as an image. Everything loads black. I figure I messed with the wrong tab when I was first using the program. I have something set wrong somewhere in my process.

I don't know how to download a black picture from Publisher to show you. I can only make a screen shot. Here are 2 files that turn black when I load them to Publisher.

Mike, Thank you for creating the Expert Guide to Publisher. I will go through it, following your directions to see if I can find what I am doing wrong.

I have uploaded jpgs today. I apologize for any repetitions. I don't have all black files because I keep deleting them. I will work from your guide today and see if I at least come away with a black afpub file to upload.

Hi Frank - when you find another one that is solid black, could you please compress it as a ZIP file before uploading it here? The forum software might modify it and it won't match the original which would prevent tracking this down. To create a zip file, just right-click the file and choose Compress...

FWIW, I found some solid black JPEGs in Apple Photos last week. They rendered correctly as thumbnails but appeared solid black when I double-clicked to view them. I exported them as standalone files but they were black when exported, and black when viewed in Affinity Photo or Adobe Photoshop. These JPEGs were created years ago with Photoshop or Lightroom. Unfortunately, I deleted these photos from Apple Photos and my drive, I didn't investigate it further, so I don't have any of my own to share. However, my issue might be unrelated.

Problem Solved!

MikeTO opened the door to finding the answer. I went through his Expert Guide to File > Document Set-up. That's where to choose color and other file choices. I am making a black and white photobook on a commercial (black and white only) inkjet printer. I had simply set my color to Grey/8 and Black and White under the color choices. It turns out that the Black and White setting has no white in it, just black. I discovered this by toggling back and forth through the choices and my totally black picture. I tried all the b/w settings and all were good except Black and White. Go figure.

Thank you all who put in the time and know-how to help me. The difference between plowing through video tutorials vs. looking things up in MikeTO's fine Expert Guide is in time saved. Tutorials are good, but for me a "how to" book can address my needs directly.

Frank
