Hi everyone! I've been using Affinity for over a year now and think I have a pretty good handle on the software generally but I'm facing the most bizarre issue which I think relates to a setting somewhere but I can't see any reference to it anywhere.

I've created a book file with 7 chapters and have added a TOC in the first chapter. For some reason though, numbering is insisting on counting Headings used in the Master Pages. I don't remember this being a thing before, but maybe something has changed? Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas?!

For info:

  • Each chapter file has a single heading from the Headings list (shown in screenshot below) with all headings below set as cross-references to the first instance.
  • All following instances are using a separate style which is not numbered and not selected in the TOC panel.
  • I'm using Affinity Publisher 2.5.7

Thank you!

Raina

I've duplicated this bug in 2.6.0 beta, too. (edited, I forgot which version I was in)

The problem doesn't occur with a standalone document but with a Book, a global numbered heading on the left side of a facing-page master will be included in the TOC, at least for chapters other than the first. It will only happen with documents that start on the right side of the spread, which is of course most documents. It's due to the "ghost frame" on the "ghost page" on the left side of the first spread.

The workaround is to open each chapter that does this and go to its first page. Expand the master layer and select the ghost frame. This will be easier if you've named your frames on the master page, but if not, select the frames one by one until see a frame being selected in the grey area to the left of page 1. Change its paragraph style to No Style, save that chapter, and repeat for the other chapters. Then update your TOC.

Below are the three bugs I reported.

You might find it harder to work around than I suggested above. You can try applying No Style to the text frame on the master page but it likely won't work. You may have to delete the numbered heading  text frames from the master page and recreate them, without using a numbered style. Apply the numbered style only on document pages.

Good luck
