When I try editing a mask with the brush tool I can paint white color (aka show image) but when I paint with black color (aka hide image) nothing happens. Using the erase tool works a workaround, but that is super anoying. Test.afphoto

Can you provide a screenshot of the full application window when using the brush?
check the following:

  • blend mode of brush (not layer)

Mac mini M1 A2348 | MBP M3

Windows 11 - AMD Ryzen 9 5900x - 32 GB RAM - Nvidia GTX 1080

LG34WK950U-W, calibrated to DCI-P3 with LG Calibration Studio / Spider 5 | Dell 27“ 4K

iPad Air Gen 5 (2022) A2589

I use iPad screenshots and videos even in the Desktop section of the forum when I expect no relevant difference.

@Akut_Luna, I'm not sure what you're wanting to do. Thanks for providing the afphoto file, however I see you have a Transparent Layer (pixel) of a man. Then below that layer is a Pixel Layer, which is red. There's no mask that I can see. There's so many things that can be done with this, without more detail, we may be pointing you in the wrong direction. For example:

  • Are you wanting to mask out the top layer of the man?
    • If so, have you first tried going to the Document  menu then checking the box beside Transparent Background ?
  • Wanting to Mask the top Layer (man) to the Red bottom Layer? This would create a Red Silhouette, the shape of the man.
  • Mask the Man from the Red Bottom Layer?
    • IF so just try deleting or hiding the Red Layer
    • Drag the Red Layer above the Man, then right-click on the Red layer, and choose Mask to Below.
      • This gives the same result as going to the Document Menu.

I don't know why the mask didn't show up when I first looked at your file. I opened it again, and viola, a mask...

I can paint with both black and white, and the act as they should. Are you sure you're painting on the Mask Layer? Check your settings for the brush, no protect alpha. The Opacity and Flow set to what? As NotMyFault suggested, what's the Blend mode for the Brush?

You can see the mask if you click on the littel arrow on the layer with the man. The problem was indeed the blend mode of the brush. No idea how I managed to change that without realising it. It was especially confusing, because the problem kept happening even if I restarted my PC and opened a compleatly new project.

Thanks for the help
