Hi Affinity community! Just recently switched over from procreate, and I’m still adjusting the program.

I’ve run into a snag in my workflow, and I’m trying to find an easy workaround. Ultimately, I’m trying to achieve a shape that I can clip a pixel layer to, to add texture, shading etc. The issue is that I need the vector shape to have a rough/hand-drawn edge, so I’m relying on the outline to do that. However, this disrupts the shading I’m attempting to add to the shape, and I end up with this ↓

Does anyone know a workaround for this that won’t add several steps to my workflow? The only fixes I can think of are:

1. Expanding the stroke, and then adding the clipping mask to that shape.

2. Using a layer mask to add texture around the edges of the shape.

or

3. Using the shape to create a mask for the pixel layer, and then positioning that in front of the original shape.

However, none of these are ideal for me because these are clunky, time consuming workarounds, and I still need to be able to edit the line.

Is there something I’m missing?

Hi, could you upload an „positive“ example showing what you try to achieve?

If you have Designer, you can use vector brushes to create strokes which look hand drawn.

This is what I’m trying to achieve (ignore the faded looking texture). I guess my question is moreso, is there a way to apply a clipping mask to vector lines? Or is there a way to give a shape a rough edge without using an outline? Right now, I’m duplicating the shape I want to clip to (with outline applied), masking it to the shading I want to apply, and just putting it “in front” of the shape, which makes it difficult to go back and edit later.

The easiest way is to use a vector shape with a custom rough brush as mask, applied to a textured pixel layer.

the other way round, using a vector shape as parent and a pixel layer clipped to it, is far more complex as you would need to apply a bitmap fill to the stroke additionally.
