dPRogerWilco Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 Since I bought Affinity Photo 2 in 2022 I have frequent crashes. App just closes at random action, mostly I believe if I click to fast e.g. on crop after loading a picture. But sometime also in other cases. I read, that crashes could be related to OpenCL, but it also happens for me with disabled OpenCL. With every update I hope it's getting fixed, but since it still happening, I am reporting it here. I attached the latest crash dumps (the "attachment_Log.txt" looks always very similar, so I added only one). I am using Windows 10. It's not a show-stopper for me, but it's annoying. Especially, because most changed tool settings are not saved, when the app crashes. c5144ae4-7a8f-47ac-a488-2c27af3e83d7.dmp 9556c45c-a539-4d51-a29b-33116f62ef1a.dmp 0d2581a8-6a51-4916-9c28-4fc1d265256e.dmp 762044fe-64b5-40f8-8016-d8b6060c66da.dmp 049f0d07-03ea-4dff-bea8-54728d8d7aae.dmp 3015599f-138f-4d57-afdd-15e135dde407.dmp 727c9093-5a61-40b0-bfac-8154b0272d4a.dmp attachment_Log.txt Quote
D88 Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 I add myself to the crashes. I don't even have crash reports because mine (Windows 11) just freezes my whole PC and I can only force-reboot. It usually happens when I export or probably when I give a command when it hasn't finished processing something else (I can't tell, because it works pretty fast, anyway). I tried turning off the Hardware Acceleration (Edit --> Settings --> Performance) as someone suggested on another topic... we'll see what happens. Worst thing, I can't even go back to V1 because I converted all my files to V2. Sigh... Quote
RRB Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 Since downloading 2.5.7, I have had multiple crashes. They occur randomly and I see no pattern. The system locks up to the point that all keyboard input stops, and I have to unplug the computer. Quote
Staff NathanC Posted December 20, 2024 Staff Posted December 20, 2024 Hi @dPRogerWilco, Sorry to hear that, I've debugged the crash reports provided but there is no clear trigger/fault i've been able to identify so far. I'd initially recommend switching over from the MSIX version to the MSI/EXE version to see if that improves things, but if not see if you can capture the crash on a screen recording while working in the app, as it's possible that you're running into a bug. ---- On 12/14/2024 at 1:28 PM, D88 said: I don't even have crash reports because mine (Windows 11) just freezes my whole PC and I can only force-reboot. The Affinity apps are user-mode applications that are able to trigger a system-wide freeze or BSOD, there are likely underlying driver/OS based issues that are causing the freeze. The Windows 11 24H2 update has introduced a number of widespread issues relating to drivers, so if you've recently updated Windows this may be related to the cause. I've linked a forum post below which contains a more detailed explanation of this. I'd also recommend keeping 'Hardware Acceleration' disabled in affinity under Edit -> Settings -> Performance. Quote
dPRogerWilco Posted December 20, 2024 Author Posted December 20, 2024 Thanks for your help. I tested msi/exe now and it behaves the same. Thanks to this post, I can now finally reproduce the crash: So if I use the freehand selection (which I need a lot), then open another picture and click on crop, then the app is crashing. In the recording: - I open the picture several times first and click on crop -> no crashes - I open the picture, use the freehand selection, close the picture and open another picture, click on crop -> crash I don't need to restart the computer like mentioned in the other post. It's stable again, until I use the freehand selection again. Affinity Photo 2 2024-12-20 13-56-06.mp4 Quote
Staff NathanC Posted December 20, 2024 Staff Posted December 20, 2024 Hi @dPRogerWilco, Many thanks for providing the screen recording, can confirm i'm able to re-produce the crash following the steps in the recording, so I'll be logging this with the developers for further investigation and resolution. It is fairly intermittent for me, as I have to be very quick to switch over to the crop tool after opening the image to trigger the crash. Quote
dPRogerWilco Posted December 20, 2024 Author Posted December 20, 2024 Thanks for forwarding it to the developers. Yes, it's also my experience that it happens more often, if click on crop directly after loading. But sometimes it also crashes after I waited a little bit. Crop is the first thing I usually do when working on a photo. And it also happens with the crop tool during raw file developing. But the error is probably in the freehand tool, which does not left everything in a clean state... Quote
RRB Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 I did turn off hardware acceleration and that seems to have resolved the issue for now. Quote
