I recently was a first time purchaser of AP2 (version 2.5.5). Today, when opening AP2, I got the heads up that a new version was available to download (2.5.7 via MSIX [x64] for my PC). The update was successfully dl'd (716,201 kb). With the present AP2 closed, I installed the dl. However, when opening the "newly updated" AP2, it still opened as version 2.5.5. So I then re-downloaded the 2.5.7 MSIX (64) version and was told that "2.5.7 was already installed". Furthermore, when the supposedly updated 2.5.5 now opens, there is an alert that a "new version is available to u[date to 2.5.6.2887. Needless to say, I'm thoroughly confused and would appreciate some guidance. Thanks.

Hi @flycaster I have no idea what happened but I suspect you have both the MSIX and MSI/EXE versions installed now. You might want to check what is actually installed.

You can download the full installer at any time with these links - click the arrow on the right side of the button to select which installer you want to use.

I don't know, Mike, what I have. I put photo2 into Everything, and there were a lot of files for both 2.5.6 and 2.5.7. But, nothing for 2.5.5??? Furthermore, I think that when I first went to dl AP2, I used MSIX/EXE, and that didn't work; switching to just MSIX did. Thus, when dl'ing the 2.5.7 update, I'm fairly certain that I used MSIX.  All the links in your post bring up the dl site that I used...pretty sure correctly. Heres a site with an apparent solution: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/error-you-require-permission-from-system-to-make/47745e2a-1609-48a7-9579-64f51041beb6 , that I have not tried. Now, what?

You can uninstall the suite and install any of the software from the links. Just don't mix them with different installers i.e. just choose either MSI or .exe

That is a reasonable solution. But, I'm not sure that I have the license number? Or, will I just be able to uninstall, and have no problem dl'ing the MSIX verion of the installer. Any explanation as to why I have files for both 2.5.6 and 2.5.7, and nothing for 2.5.5, although the latter is my present version?

If you got a notice with a Download button, then you were running the MSI/EXE version (not the MSIX version), and you must choose the MSI/EXE version from the website, not the MSIX version. By choosing the MSIX version you created a second installation of the program.

You need to uninstall the MSIX version you installed, which should be the second one shown in the standard Windows Start menu, and which you should be able to uninstall by right-clicking on that Start menu entry.

Hey Walt, your the man. Going to the start menu, there were two versions of AP2: 2.5.5 and 2.5.7. And, when I selected the first version, a dropdown (2.5.6) did occur, showing it to be the MSI/EXE version...and I thought the 2.5.5 was installed via MSIX. Anyway, now that I know the second version (2.5.7) is fully updated version (installed via MSIX,) I can't figure out how to uninstall 2.5.5? When going to Uninstall in Control Panel, there is only one Photo 2 showing, and going by its date of installation, it appears to be the original 2.5.5 version. Interestingly, the 2.5.7 version doesn't show up...I would have expected both versions to appear in the CP's Uninstall screen? So, how do I make sure that I properly uninstall 2.5.5?

Hold on, I just paid more attention to your second paragraph and what I just wrote is not what you are suggesting. You want me to uninstall the second version, but why if it is showing to be a functioning 2.5.7 (MSIX installed)? Can't just keep this updated version and uninstall the 2.5.5, and remember that I used MSIX to install? Obviously, I may still be a little confused, eh?

Don't use the Control Panel. It is obsolete, and can't handle all the newer forms of Windows executables. Use the Windows Settings app, or right-click on the one you want to uninstall in the Windows Start menu.

If you went to the trouble to install the MSI/EXE originally, then presumably you had some reason for using that non-default installation approach. For example, perhaps you're invoking the Affinity application from some other application that doesn't know how to invoke MSIX applications. Or perhaps you're using other programs (such as an alternative Start menu) that doesn't understand MSIX. Or needing application shortcuts on the desktop. Or ....

So my general recommendation to users who had made the decision to use MSI/EXE, and mistakenly installed using MSIX during an update, is to delete the MSIX. It's fine to decide instead uninstall the older MSI/EXE one, but you should understand why you installed it in the first place and make sure that switching to MSIX isn't going to cause you some problem. The key points are to not have both versions installed, and once you've decided to use MSI/EXE to make sure on each update cycle to keep using it :)

Not really sure why I first dl'd the MSIX/EXE version (2.5.5) in the first place. But, from what you are saying, this version seems to be more "versatile" and the one to use? So, let's say I uninstall AP2-2.5.7 (that was MSIX installed) and keep 2.5.5. Will I have to update 2.5.5 to 2.5.6 before going to 2.5.7, or can I directly update to 2.5.7 (MSIX/EXE)?

Again, I am confused. I ran a Google on the difference between the two methods of installation and here's an AI response which says that MSIX is more flexible:

"While both MSIX and MSI/EXE are used to install applications on Windows, the key difference is that MSIX is a more modern, unified packaging format offering enhanced security, better update management, and application isolation compared to the older MSI/EXE method, which is considered more traditional and can have compatibility concerns with certain system configurations; essentially, MSIX provides a cleaner and more robust installation experience with additional features like containerization, while MSI/EXE is a more established but potentially less flexible option."

So, I guess my bottom line as to which form of dl to use is:  I want AP2 to be able to communicate with other photo editing programs (where possible) like PhotoLab 7, FastRawViewer,  Luminar 4, Photoshop Elements.

EDIT
Well, I bit the bullet; took a chance although I wasn't completely sure what would happen. Uninstalled the 2.5.7 version (keeping the original 2.5.5) via Start, dl'd the MSIX/EXE 2.5.7 update and executed. This went well, as I now had just one version of 2.5.7. In order see about communication with other apps, I placed Photo2.exe into FastRawViewer's preferences...this should allow for the quick transfer of an image file from FRV to AP2, and it did...success! Feeling quite confident, I then placed photo2.exe into PhotoLab's Export preferences, and the PL image was exported to AP2...again, success!  Lastly, Faststone will export image to AP2...success.

Looks like I'm a very happy camper, and many thanks to you all for your helpful suggestions. Happy Holidays to all.

Note that it is the MSI/EXE, not MSIX/EXE. Perhaps that is part of your confusion?

The downloaded installer will be for 2.5.7 (as you found when you tried it :) ).

Glad you have it working now.

heyas, i hope this post isn't too old.

i have the same problem.  i have the msi version of 2.5.5 installed where i want it.  i got the msiX version of 2.5.7, and it just installed itself, and i don't know where it is to uninstall it.

if you can just tell me where the msix installer put it?  so i can find it and remove it, then i'll get the right installer and know better next time.

thank you! :)

Uninstalling the files is easy: Go to Windows Start, click on ALL find the Affinity app you wish to uninstall, right-click on the program and select uninstall from the drop-down menu.

To download the EXE/MSi Files click the llink below and than click on the pointed bracket and select EXE/MSI,

@blr3d MSIX install location: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\SerifEuropeLtd

The WindowsApps folder is hidden by default; to view the folder, enable Show Hidden Items in File Explorer.

It’s best to uninstall apps via Windows:

Don't use the Control panel. Use Settings, then Apps (or Applications). the Control panel is old and has not been updated to support newer functions.

Or, as mentioned above, use the standard Windows Start menu, click All, locate the application, and right-click.
