Paint Brush Tool Affinity Photo 2.5.7

Paintbrush in Affinity Photo V2.5.7 seems to be not working for me. In Photo V1 I loaded an image, added a B/W layer and created a mask on that layer. I selected the Paint Brush Tool, selected the black circle in the top right and painted the mask - the B/W is masked where I paint i.e. the resulting image is back to colour where I painted. This is what I expect. I did the same thing in V2.5.7, but painting the mask has no effect - the whole image stays B/W. All settings (flow, opacity, hardness, black circle etc) are set appropriately and the same as in my V1. Interestingly, if I select the Pixel Tool instead of the Paint Brush Tool in V2.5.7 the mask painting works as I expect. Help

Question, is the Paint Brush set to normal?

Here the Paint Brush works as expected.

do you mean the blend mode? It's set to normal, and the brush is basic

Work fine here on MacOS, if I understood well...

OK - I've got it: the protect alpha box was ticked, which I guess overrides the painting on the mask.
