How do I set the Running header to a character style?
In the settings of Running header i can select character style as the header style. When I select them, it doesn't work.

Is it a bug that the character style is in Running header style, or am I doing something wrong?

The problem is that the Fields panel and the Running header settings in it are not global. This means that on all master pages where the Running header is placed, you need to call the Fields panel and set the style for each field. Why is this so?

Another problem is that the Running header is not updated when Apply master -> Migrate. You need to select Clear. Then everything disappears from the page.
It is impossible to work. Perhaps it works in new files, but in old files it is almost impossible to work.
Version 2.5.

I just tested it in 2.5.6 and cannot find a problem using Running Headers (RH) with character styles. Can you share a test document?

The RH settings are not global, but you can set the default settings. There are two ways to change the defaults. 1: Creating a RH will insert a field and set the defaults for future RH fields. 2: Click outside of a text frame or click in text that doesn't have a RH field and then click the ellipsis (...) icon to the right of the RH field in the Fields panel - the popup will be titled "Running Header Defaults" to convey that you are setting the defaults and not inserting a field. (If you click next to a RH field and then click the ellipsis icon, the popup will be titled "Running Header Settings" to convey that you are editing the settings for an existing field.

I believe the settings are not global by design because typically a document would have just 1-4 RH fields so there's no need for a more complex approach.

If the RH field is on a master page and you edit the field on the master, the changes should be immediately updated on document pages. You should not have to apply the master again.

But if you have edited the frame's text from the document page, then the frame will be detached from the master and will not update. As you've discovered, applying the master will not update the RH field because no text in the frame will be updated when you apply a master with Migrate selected - you must select Clear, this is by design.

I think you'll find that the best approach is to place the RH field into a frame on the master and to not edit that frame's text on a document page. If you need to edit it (perhaps to change a chapter name), considering using two frames to avoid detaching the frame from the master.

Good luck!

The problem is that I didn't detach the frame. I just created a new frame on the page, selected the text style I had set for the Running header, and nothing happened. I had to apply the master page again with a clear option. But since I had text frames on the master page, everything disappeared from the pages.

I don't know what to suggest, I can only duplicate what you said by editing the text in the frame from the document page.

Hi @anto,

Which version of Publisher are you seeing this issue in, 2.5.7 or the 2.6.0.2950 Beta? I'm assuming 2.5.7 because of where you've posted the thread but there does appear to be a bug in the Beta with Running Headers which I'm not seeing in 2.5.7 hence the question...

Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0
MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse
HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse
