Photoshop Sections

Within AF is there a way to duplicate Photoshop's "Sections" capability?  Specifically, I want to create a mask in an area where there is minimal tonal contrast in order to apply adjustments to the masked area.

I'm not familiar with the 'Sections' feature in PS, are you able to provide a link to the feature you're referring to? That may help clarify if there's an equivalent feature or workflow. If you could also provide a sample file where you want to apply this that would be helpful.
