Does somebody know how the expressions "spreadwidth", "sprw", "sw" can be used?

If I type one of them into the X field (to move an object by this size) the typed text shows up in red and gets ignored+removed with "Enter".

When you type invalid text into a Transform field, you should see red text with a pink highlight. When you type a valid variable, the text should change to orange without a highlight. I just tested sprw and it worked fine for me as shown below.

But I see in your screenshot, which is also from macOS, that you've typed the variable correctly and it's still red with pink highlight so I'm unsure what's going on there. I typed a space after my - but that doesn't make a difference.

Thanks for checking. This made me try again and, oddly, in this examples it works on page one but not on page 2:
