Colour Fill Not Working

Hi guys,

I'm new to Affinity Designer. Im trying to colour my artwork and have watched videos but it seems its sill not working. For example filling shapes like eyes it works, but when trying to fill in between of strokes like the stitching on the brim of this hat its not filling? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
