When I try to export to PDF I got "An error occurred while exporting to "File Name"" additionally the preview fails to generate

I've worked it out now - There was no PDF preset selected, when I selected PDF (for export) it was okay.

When the Preset value is blank that just means that the settings you have chosen do not wholly correspond to those of any of the presets, but it should still be possible to export using those settings.

We would need to see your export settings before you chose a Preset to see what could have been wrong.

Same here (German version) - before in 2.5.5 all kind of export profiles (preset one as well as ones with changes [leaving the "preset-field" blank]) worked all fine, in 2.5.6 most of them fail. Guess there's some context to color and so on - if I choose the default "PDF (ready for printer)" it works fine, but if I choose the default "PDF (high quality)" e.g. (which includes changes of color profile and so on) it does not work.

And I guess I can pre-assume whether it'll work or not - if the preview-field remains blank even after some waiting it will fail - if a preview becomes visible, it works.

After some further trying I seem to have some idea what detail might cause the problem - if I choose "PDF high quality" e.g. with unchanged default settings - it does not work - if I just tick the "ICC profile include..." checkbox (that is by default unchecked in that profile) without changing the other settings of that preset (converting to RGB and in my case with sRGB IEC6...), it works (the preview as well).

Welcome to the Affinity forums :)

Sorry this regression escaped in the new 2.5.6 update, and thankfully there is a simple work around for now (to check the "include ICC profile" option in Advanced tab ), while we address the problem and get another patch out.

Wow, this strikes me as a pretty fatal flaw – Publisher's basically useless to me if it won't export to a PDF (without half an hour surfing around for a solution). The program shouldn't even be pushing for an update if it's going to break its functionality this badly, to my way of thinking. I guess after 2.5.7 comes out I'll be ignoring or at least treating future notices with a lot of skepticism.
