Hi. I am designing a website template which has an artboard, and 4 groups within, covering nav, hero, main, and footer. Whenever I reposition an object (text, shape, image etc.), it leaves the group it was in and moves to the root of the Artboard. I'm talking moving a few pixels minimum, nothing drastic. Is this normal behaviour?

By default AD creates all objects as child layers nested in an artboard layer. If you want to keep certain groups/layers outside of any artboard layer and avoid them being auto-moved inside an artboard layer then it helps to disable the option "Edit All Layers". (… or don't use artboard layers at all)

@thomaso That doesn't explain why an object would pop out of a group if it was moved a few pixels. I tried on an artboard with groups nested in the artboard layer, with Edit All Layers on or off, yet I can't make an object leave the group if I move it. I wonder how the OP's object is being moved.

edit: What the heck does Edit All Layers do? It doesn't seem to matter if it is enabled or disabled, everything I do to a layer works the same.

I am not familiar with releated V2 improvements and its layers interface/icons but to me it looks like that in OP's first screenshot "Navigation", "Hero" etc. are not child layers of "Artboard 1" but outside.

This is what happens to me in V1, first with disabled, then with enabled option:

@thomaso Okay, I see now and can get that to happen in V2. It is kind of hard to put a layer outside of the artboard layer yet underneath it. I guess I always have all the layers nested in the artboard layer when working with artboards. Once in a while I see a layer appear above the artboard layer when I create it but I just put it back in the nested layers where it should be.

Thanks for the come-back. It's a real nuisance, especially with the layer numbers building. I'm building a concept for a client, so I need the Artboards to build the different page layouts. @thomaso I did as you suggested, regarding moving the groups outside the artboard and tweaked the logo. Have a guess where it ended up?

But why do you specifically need objects outside of this artboard? – Note, you can position an artboard on another in the coordinate system, in the Layers panel it will appear as a nested artboard layer inside a parent artboard layer.

Your resulting screenshot looks to me as if "Edit All Layers" was enabled when you modified the position of logo.png.
Can you show a video that demonstrates the procedure and includes the entire Layers panel (incl. its buttons)?

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but I do not see any Groups in the OP's screenshots, just some things with Folder icons that I can't remember how they get created.

@R C-R, these Group folder icons appear in the Help (> Layers Panel), in forum screenshots, in video tutorials and spotlight articles since years. You "create" them via the burger menu …

make group operation, & then delete that layer, leaving just the empty group with a folder icon in the Layers panel.

@thomaso I updated to v2.5.6 before I saw your message. And now the issue isn't happening - I feel like a fraud. I will look into the "Edit All Layers" settings, as I'm not familiar. Thanks thomaso and all that replied.

Cheers.
