My Windows 10 PC doesn't have a discrete GPU so I am considering buying one to help speed up processing in Addinity Photo.

Are there any recommendations other than sticking to one with an Nvidia chipset?

Thanks

Be sure to check the power requirements of whatever graphics card you are thinking of buying AND ensure the PSU in your machine is capable of delivering the necessary power.

Excellent point, I could have easily overlooked that!

If you are in the UK I would advise getting a second hand 3060 from CEX as you get a 2 year guarantee

I don't live there, but anyway is that a line of cards that works well with Affinity?

Question for me, how old is your PC? Running Windows 10 and having a hardware with onboard graphic, I assume that your PC is old and more at the lower end of its specs.

In such a case I would not recommend investing in a new graphic card and combining it with other old components. While the geforce RTX 3060 with 12GB RAM is not a bad idea, check how old is the remaining hardware. If the hardware is lets say 6 years old and was SOA at that time, get a graphic card of the same age, e.g. a 2080 with max VRAM, it might also be a bit cheaper.

@DarkerBlack I'll ask you the same question as old hardware is more likely to have a low power PSU that might not be able to support even what would be considered these days to be a modest GPU.

In my case, my Win 10 machine is so ancient the highest spec graphics card I can fit is an equally ancient Nvidia GTX 1050Ti.  Anything more, even a GTX 1060, and I'd need to replace the PSU, which of course is just not cost effective for such old kit.

Can you give full details of your system?  It will help people give you better advice.

Sure, the guts of it is:

  • Gigabyte GA-Z270-HD3 motherboard
  • Intel i7 7700
  • Thermaltake Riing Silent 12 Red CPU Cooler
  • 32GB DDR4 RAM (4 x 8GB)
  • Corsair RM550 - 550W Power Supply

Now that I have looked, it is older than I thought - 7 years. Specs are in my other reply.

I will most likely upgrade

If you run the Photo benchmark then you can compare your GPU's performance to the GPUs in the latest benchmarks table for some guidance on how much faster they might be for you. Please also share your own benchmark in the thread, too, to help others. We don't have a ton of computers in the table yet since we started over when the benchmark was revised in 2.5. Instructions for running the benchmark are in the first post in the thread.

Cheers

While your PSU might be sufficient (so running in full power), I personally would not invest a single cent in such an old PC.

Having looked at the details, I agree. Also, from the table @MikeTO referenced, it seems that almost any GPU would be an improvement with a modern CPU.
