Affinity Publisher V2 - creating a text effect - not working ?

Ive set up a test - pic attached - unable to add any effect to the text using layer FX ?  It just applies effect to the frame?

Have tried selecting text, using frame text, artistic text.  A Youtube vid tutorial indicates its simple...so where am I going wrong?

I've tried reproducing your design and this is the result:

Top is artistic text and the bottom frame text. It's hard to suggest anything that might explain this.

I would have expected this result if it was a rectangle/placed image and not text. Is the text editable?

Can you post a simplified version of what you are testing with just a text layer & the FX applied to it?

Hi @MtnDave,
In the Character panel, make sure you set the Background Colour to None (currently is set to white). It's the colour well located on the right of the Font Colour (which is set to green). After the change the colour of the Outline FX (black) will follow the contour of the letters and not the contour of the artistic text frame.

Thanks - Tried this but seems to have no effect. Attached snip indicates character background button i used.

I set up a fresh file with one page as suggested by @R C-R - that works fine - attached.

The problem file is an A4 mag I produce quarterly - I have stripped out most pages, just left a test page and resaved which still illustrates problem so I can only assume there is a setting somewhere that is causing the problem?
