I'm wondering if someone could help me please. Newbie to Affinity and haven't used photoshop for over 15 years now.

I've been trying to use one of the tutorials here for pattern layers, the one that renders the floorplan. I am following the instructions exactly but for some reason my software is not behaving the same way as the tutorial. For context I am trying to colour render an interior elevation of bathroom and want to add wall colours, tiling, etc to it. I have opened up my PNG file of the elevation and then have dragged and dropped the wall colour onto the tool bar to open another tab. I've used the new pattern layer from selection command to create it as pattern in the layer tab and then deleted the one titled background. I've then copy and pasted it into the sheet where my bare elevation is so it comes into the layers named as pattern. My elevation in this sheet is named background.

When I copy and paste in the colour it sits in front of my background image but when I then click in the layers list onto my background layer it doesn't bring background to the fore like it shows in the tutorial. Clicking on both pattern and background just shows the solid blue colour of pattern. I can get it to show background if I go to the toolbar along the top and click on the move to back or move back one tab and then can complete the task to use flood select tool in a certain area but when I then try and flood another area it deletes what I've already done and shows the dots on the screen or in-fills other areas of the drawing I don't want to do. There is obviously something not right with the layers but I cannot figure out what. I've tried to lock/unlock them plus various other things but cannot get it to work as simply as the tutorial shows. I've tried various videos and searches online but have come to a dead end so would be grateful if anyone can advise. Thanks.

Here are some suggestions to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Layer Order and Visibility

  • After pasting your pattern layer into the document, ensure the pattern layer is positioned above your "background" layer in the Layers panel.
  • To work with transparency, make sure your pattern layer has an appropriate blend mode (like "Multiply" or "Overlay") if needed. You can adjust this in the Layers panel.

2. Flood Select Tool Behaviour

  • The Flood Select tool works based on pixel colour and transparency, so any overlapping areas may interfere with the selection. To prevent this:
    • Ensure you are selecting the correct layer in the Layers panel before applying the tool.
    • After completing a selection, deselect it by pressing Ctrl+D (Windows) or Cmd+D (Mac) before starting a new selection in another area.

3. Locking/Unlocking Layers

  • Make sure the background layer is unlocked if you need to make edits to it. Conversely, you might want to lock the pattern layer temporarily to prevent accidental changes while you work on other parts of the design.

4. Deleting the Background Layer in the Pattern Tab

  • Instead of deleting the "background" layer in the tab where you created the pattern, consider hiding it by clicking the visibility icon (the eye symbol). This ensures no unexpected issues with transparency or layer composition.

5. Common Workflow Tips

  • If possible, try grouping the layers related to your pattern and background for better organization.
  • To add specific details like wall colours or tiles, you can use clipping masks or adjustment layers to control how the pattern interacts with your elevation drawing.

6. Check for Updates

  • Ensure your Affinity software is up-to-date, as tutorials might use features or fixes introduced in recent versions.
