I can't combine two lines

when I combine two lines they disappear instead of creating a single line. I use the Xor command and the lines disappear.
My version  affinity is 2.5.5 my OS is 10.15.7

Welcome to Affinity Forums
Affinity apps can't perform boolean operation between lines directly. You must expand them (menu Layer > Expand Stroke) to curves before performing the Xor operation.

Since you can't add them for the reasons explained above you have to Merge them instead (Layer > Geometry > Merge Curves). Or alternatively expand the curves/lines first then perform an add operation.

[EDIT] Not sure I understood the question correctly. Do you mean add two overlapping curves (boolean operation) or join curves (that is connect an end point of one line with the end point of a different line?

Hey, I'm not sure if this answers the question or if it's what you were looking for, but I got the program today, and when I was trying to join two lines I had a lot of trouble finding the tool to do so. I needed to select both points on both lines that I wanted to combine and then hit "join curves" under the action section in the bar on top. It should be: 'fill', then 'stroke', 'convert', and 'action'. It was the fourth option.

I have to say that your screenshot appears to be just one curve (line) so Close Curve would work.
