Paste goes to different layer but does not show on the working screen

Hello, just after some guidance on what step I'm missing...

I want to remove part of a line by copying the white background and pasting over the line. Did the rasterize image thing. Marquee tool selected, copied the selection. Moved to cover the line and pasted. I can see there is a new layer but why is it not showing on the image?

Was the selection canceled before insertion?

Make sure to switch to the Move Tool (press V) before moving the pasted layer.

Thank you - I didn't realise that was necessary - but it hasn't seemed to make any difference.

If you hide the lower pixel layer, what do you see? Is the upper layer showing as all white or does it include a line?

Hiding the original layer makes everything invisible, all lines including the ones I want to keep. The upper layer then shows as all white.
