I am working a lot using lines and expanding these lines to get the shape I want. I noticed sometime odd things happen when employing this workflow. I could reproduce one of the issues in the steps below.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Use the pen tool to place two points.
  2. Place a third point on top of the first point.
  3. Set the stroke width to something substantial, like 10 pts.
  4. Select Layer > Expand Stroke.
  5. Observe a shape with one rounded (or inverse rounded) end and one square end.

Alternative steps:

  1. Create a rectangle with rounded joins (default).
  2. Set the stroke width to something substantial, like 10 pts.
  3. Press right mouse button and convert the shape to curves.
  4. Remove two points in the polygon to get a line segment.
  5. If you end up with a horizontal line, make sure to rotate it slightly, as purely horizontal lines convert correctly to a rectangular shape.
  6. Select Layer > Expand Stroke.
  7. Observe a shape with one rounded end and one square end.

Expected result

A line which converts to a shape having straight ends. Ignoring the duplicate point.

Actual result

A line which converts to a curve shape with both a straight and rounded end.

That is actually producing a closed Curve comprised of two nodes and two overlapping line segments, as is your first method of plotting two points then a third point on top of the first.
