I can't open a Designer document in Publisher because it says it's already open even though it's not.

This happens in all the applications: no matter which app you use to create a document, if I try to open it in a different app than the one it was created in, it tells me that the document is already open when it isn't.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Create a document in Designer
2. Save the document
3. Close Designer
4. Open the document in another application (e.g., Publisher)
5. An error appears saying it's already open

I've attached a video showing the issue.

You're not closing Designer. The red button you pressed merely closes the user interface, which you can see as the Menu still says Affinity Designer 2,  and leaves the application running, and the documents open.

To close Designer, use Cmd+Q or the Affinity Designer 2 menu, which has a Quit action.

Thank you for your response, @walt.farrell

It might be due to the language settings, but I close Affinity Designer by right-clicking on the program icon and then selecting "Quit."

Initially, I do close it as you suggested, but a second later, I go back and close it properly.

Even after having exited and closed the program correctly, Affinity Publisher tells me that Designer is still open.

Thanks for the clarification.

There have been some logged issues where the "lock" file was not properly deleted when the file or application is closed. Perhaps you've hit that situation. I think some of them have been fixed, but some remain unfixed.

To avoid that, you could consider:

  • Using File > Edit in to switch to the other application and edit the file.
    or
  • Waiting 5 minutes, for the lock to time-out.
    or
  • Using Finder, going to the folder where the file is located, and manually deleting the lock file. This will be a Hidden file named the same as the real file, but with ~lock~ added to the end.
