Hi when I make an artboard the background turns white from dark background. This white is hard on the eyes, is there a way to make it darker?

Serif's unusual approach to solving the "dark" look of the application 🙂
Something similar happened earlier with the list of fonts, which burned the eyes when working at night, but it has already been fixed.

I think the OP is asking about the area surrounding artboards in the document window, not about the overall look of the UI.

If so, then what @GarryP mentioned should do it.

Of course, the attached screenshots cannot leave anyone in doubt as to which completely inadequate element of the "dark" appearance of the application we are talking about.

With standard functioning applications, there is no need to tuning what the application has to offer already in the base. Maybe it means something different to you, but to me "dark" doesn't mean "light".

If you have a problem understanding what "dark theme" means, try looking at the link.

https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/dark-mode

By the way, the first sentence from the link: "... to provide a comfortable viewing experience tailored for low-light environments." and does the Affinity dark mode screenshot look consistent?

Isn't it obvious from that what is being asked about is the background around the artboard?

If not from that, isn't it obvious from the second screenshot & its comment:

How could this possibly be interpreted as anything other than what @GarryP suggested would do what was wanted?

I understand what Pšenda actually means. Since the application is in the "dark theme mode", and everything else in the UI is dark, creating an Arboard shouldn't give me background that is white, app should set dark background if it knows that it is in the dark mode. A user shoudn't have to come to forums to ask how to fix this if the app applied dark mode to every part of the UI. I'm a new user so I'm still learning how to use Designer. It was actually easy to fix once someone told me where to look. But yes from UX perspective it's bad experience, I worked like this for few days until I decided to ask on forums :) But its not a big problem from my perspective, I'm happy to use the app and learn it, however from UX perspective if they fix it would be good :)

AD gives users a choice for the background grey level separately for canvases & for artboards, & each can be set independantly in the Dark & Light UI modes. Each of them can be set from completely black to completely white. See for example the https://affinity.help/designer2/en-US.lproj/pages/Workspace/preferences.html help topic "User Interface options" section for more about this.

IOW, the choice is completely up to the user -- Affinity does not force anyone to use any particular greyness. So for example, users who typically create artboards with black-filled backgrounds, they would most likely not want the surrounding background to be 100% black & conversely if they create ones with 100% white backgrounds. As an example, consider this 2 Artboards.afdesign file. In either Dark or Light mode, would you really want a completely black or white background?

BTW, in your first screenshot, note that the background is not white, just a very light shade of grey.
