Some days ago I posted the following bug:

And I just noticed that Affinity Designer's general shape tool doesn't have the rectangle tool!

Affinity Photo available shapes:

Affinity Designer available shapes (there is no rectangle tool!):

This might be the reason why the general shape tool icon doesn't update when changing shape tools with keyboard, as I explained in the post I mentioned.

On the other hand, as a suggestion, I'd remove the round rectangle tool and give the normal rectangle tool the option to have rounded corners, it makes a lot more sense to merge both in just the rectangle tool, to me at least.

I hope this can be fixed, I find it weird no one noticed before. Thanks.

Others have noticed it, and I mentioned it in response to your other report where I said that in my opinion it's not a bug.

The Shape Tools are simply organized differently in Designer than in Photo.

However, I've since noticed a couple of other topics about this, where the Serif team has attached a bug tag, AF-3897 so perhaps they do view it as a discrepancy that should be fixed.

@Yuli Actually Designer does have both the Rectangle and Ellipse tools. They aren't in my "Shapes" fly-out menu, but I do have them as separate items in my toolbar. I don't remember if it was that way by default or whether I added them myself.

To add them (or other tools) to your toolbar...VIEW > CUSTOMIZE TOOLS, then drag the tools you want to your toolbar.

Since I use rectangle and ellipse shapes a lot, I actually prefer having them as separate, individual items in my toolbar, which saves me the extra step of opening the Shapes fly-out menu first.

I'm using v2.5.5 on Mac Ventura.

Can confirm this is an issue i've previously logged under AF-3897 as the shape flyout tool functionality should be the same across the apps.

Thank you very much!

I hope Serif could fix this, since I suffer from this bug that doesn't allow me to work having only the shape tool icon:
