Ambient Life in the Red Cave

An unknown lifeform drifts silently through the Red Cave carried on a current of air, disturbing the ambient atmosphere therein by their vibrations and causing unease among the native species that reside there.

I wanted to create a dark, moody space in which the only light comes from natural fluorescent light )(calcite) in the walls, casting an eerie red glow, which I did by laying several layers of textures over the top of each other. I created most of the textures in Affinity Photo (except for one of rust, which I used for its light and dark qualities).

Then I changed the colours using HSL adjustment layers and blending modes, and painted in the plants using brush strokes from my free 'Nature' and 'Byzantium' gold brushes for Affinity Photo.
