nanshaw Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 My text tool in Affinity Publisher is forcing all caps and when I try to backspace it's moving the curser forward. Please help. Quote
GarryP Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 Welcome to the forums @nanshaw Can you give us a full-screen (whole application UI) screenshot where we can see the Layers Panel, and the Character Panel, and the Transform Panel, and the extents of the whole text layer bounding box when you are editing the text? nanshaw Posted November 10, 2024 Author Posted November 10, 2024 Sorry for the delay in my response. It corrected itself but has now began doing it again. I'm using the Frame Text Tool. Here's the screenshot you asked for GarryP: Quote
nanshaw Posted November 10, 2024 Author Posted November 10, 2024 (edited) Also, I'm using V1.10.6.1665. Sometimes it fixes itself when I reboot the program. Edited November 10, 2024 by nanshaw Quote
GarryP Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Thanks for the screenshot. Unfortunately there’s nothing obvious that I can see which would cause either of the problems you are having. At first I thought that you might have flipped the layer horizontally so that the text was going backwards in some strange way – so that the backspace was moving the cursor to the right – but that doesn’t seem to be the case, unless that font is particularly weird. I can’t think of what might be making the backspace key move the cursor to the right, except maybe some OS/low-level/system issue. You don’t seem to have All Caps switched ON in the Character Panel, so that doesn’t look to be the cause of always getting capitals. Actually, none of the Typography options in that panel seem to be available, so that’s a bit odd. Are you sure that the font you are using has lower-case letters? I notice that the Fill colour in your Swatches Panel is showing as None which looks ‘wrong’ to me as it should be the colour of your text. The colour is grey in the Character Panel, and the Context Toolbar, but None in the Swatches Panel. Maybe that’s got something to do with whatever is happening. Hopefully someone else will have a better idea of what’s happening and what you can do about it. Would it be possible for you to share the document (in a Package with the font(s)) so that we can experiment with it? Quote

Does it fix both issues? – What if you reboot the computer (instead of just relaunching the app)? Since it's related to text it might be influenced by installed fonts. Does your Windows system offer a reset option for the font data base? (as macOS does by its 'Safe Boot' mode) The Backspace/Delete key direction issue has been reported occasionally. For example in this thread below, but with no resolution or further discussion... as if the issue went away on its own. (I had it once in a rather early Affinity version and solved it with a reboot) Quote • MacBookPro Retina 15" | macOS 10.14.6 | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1 • iPad 10.Gen. | iOS 18.5. | Affinity V2.6

I think I've figured out what's "triggering" it: copy/pasting text, and just messing around with text inside the text box. But I am using some different fonts and maybe they're creating issues too. 19 hours ago, thomaso said: Does it fix both issues? Yes it does because both issues work in tandem. I have had to reboot the whole system from time to time when rebooting the program didn't work. Rebooting the system works. 19 hours ago, thomaso said: Does your Windows system offer a reset option for the font data base? Yes it appears as though I do but I'm on a deadline with this project and I'm afraid to do anything like that. 20 hours ago, GarryP said: I can’t think of what might be making the backspace key move the cursor to the right, except maybe some OS/low-level/system issue. This might very well be an issue because it seems to do it after I've been working in the program for hours. I wonder if there's a caching situation going on? Since I'm on a deadline with this project I think I'll just work with the glitch and try not to mess too much with my text boxes (deleting and starting a new text box instead of editing inside the text box for example). But I wonder if updating to V2 would bring more stability? I'll update if I need to. Thanks for helping. Quote
